Default Wipe pattern on yella terra with shims vs no shims

Hi guys I’m looking for some help here getting the correct wipe pattern on my 383. The first picture is with a shim from yella terra and the second one is without any shims. They seem to look very similar and I’m wondering which one looks better or if I should add more shims.

I measured for pushrod length with two shims and it comes out around 7.535 with preload for Johnson 2110s at 0.035

This looks great. Are the rockers adjustable? I have yella terra adjustable and I didn’t need shims for my Mamo (AFR) heads

I personally do not see a problem with the first image as there's nothing wrong with the swipe being slightly closer to the intake manifold. That said if your looking to be closer to the center of the valve then I'd just do the one shim as two looks to be swiping the valve closer to the exhaust manifold.

To me the one with the one shim looks to be centered the best out of the three options

I will probably end up going with one then. If I could find a slightly thinner one for the second shim it would be close to perfect but I’m not sure where to buy one from do you have any suggestions?

Shooting for a THINNER wipe, regardless of it being centered or not, trumps a more centered but wider pattern. I’m not saying that a badly offset pattern is ok, but I shoot for as narrow a pattern as possible, and it being a tad high, or low on the tip, doesn’t scare me. Having said that, your 2nd pic looks better to me.

Judging from the images you cannot see much if any in the change of thickness to the swipe and yes the second image looks like money to me.

Are you using lifters converted to solid? If not your lifters are likely not pumped up which will change the results.
I used checking springs when I set mine up so as to not collapse the lifter.
One shim on my AFR’s got it right.

they are not solid there are Johnson 2110s. And I did not have a checking spring so it is very possible the lifters are collapsing as I spin the engine.

Without checking springs, you must use a pair of solid lifers. Hydraulic lifters will collapse and give you the wrong readings. You can take your hydraulic lifter apart and put a spacer in to make a solid checking lifter and then when you are done replace the parts of the lifter you removed.

I can get checking springs it will be much easier to swap springs with the heads on then pull them to do lifters.

Yes, checking springs will work.
