Default Thoughts on my 5.3 buid?

So I am trying to build a relatively budget friendly 5.3 for my 68 camaro. If I am not happy with it, I plan on going to a 6.0 later with just swapping most of my parts over.

Current Idea:
5.3 LM7 that I will put a set of flat tops in, 706 heads(stock), sdpc LS6 power max plus cam(220/222--0.570”--0.570”--112(+2))
Rods will have ARP bolts installed
Holley 302-2 or 3 oil pan
ls6 intake
Holley terminator x max computer set up with a DBW throttle body
Headers will probably be speedengineering or holley(haven't decided)

Goal is about 375 crank horse

My current engine is a Gen I sbc 327 with flat tops, 461 heads(so 9.5:1 compression) a 222/222 447/447 cam and a 2101 intake. Makes I think MAYBE 290hp. I am hopeful the 5.3 would be an upgrade.

With 706 heads and flat tops, your compression will be 10.59:1 assuming a .051 head gasket and .005 out of the hole, which is typical for these engines.

Using summit's calculator, I should be at 10.8:1 as I will be using a 0.040 gasket, 61cc chambers, 0cc flat tops, 0.005 out of the hole.

I had a 5.3 before my latest build. Used a tbss intake, 224/224 TSP cam, and PRC 5.3 2.5 heads it put down 340hp/315tq through the 4l60e and F**d 9 inch.

My plan is to go with a set of ported heads or aftermarket heads after getting the car running, I want something I can swap to the 6.0(if I am not happy) later without having to change intakes.

I just want this car to outrun my wife's rav4 prime.

if your're planning on using your stock rods you do not want to go with ARP bolts for them unless you resize the rods themselves. Read around here for some nightmares of people that didn't.

The owner of the machine shop that we use heard me talking about them with a buddy and re-iterated that it was a bad idea.

For your stated goals, I wouldn't mess with it at all.

I'd go for the 6.0 from the start.

Do it once & do it the way you really want. That's usually cheaper and better than having to do it twice.

I learned this the hard way doing a Hawk's Motorsports Level 2 T-56 in my 91 RS Camaro because I thought the Level 2 would be satisfactory instead of spending the extra on a Magnum. That was a mistake 😕 in my decision making. Eventually, the 91 RS will get upgraded to a Magnum.

Nah, that is some CRAZY money around here. 1800 bucks for a 6.0 versus this 5.3 at 350 bucks

I have a set of Cometic .040 head gaskets with 3.910 bore new in box, ended up using GM .051 thick gaskets for my 383 instead. I'd sell em for less than what I paid if interested.

I'm starting to see this is true as well.
