Default Cam recommendation for 408 stroker

I'm looking for some recommendations on cam choices for a motor I'm building. The motor is a 6.0 iron block stroked to 408. Heads will be factory ls3 rectangle port heads that will get some porting done. This motor will be going into an 89 s10 blazer. The blazer will be converted from 4wd to full time AWD. I'm looking for 550+ engine hp which is completely possible with a cam like the 240/252 0.600/0.600 112LSA from TSP. My concern with this cam is drivability. I want daily drivability, strong low to mid rpm hp/torque with a nasty hot rod choppy sound. Another cam that I would 100% choose if the motor was a stock LS1 or even LS3 I would probably put the 228/232 0.600/0.600 110 or 112 LSA cam in it, but I is that too small for a 408 stroker? I also love the sound of the 228/232 like the one in this video.

Any recommendations?

239/254 cam is the most proven LS3 headed stroker cam in 402 to 416 cubic inch motors.

My SBE LS3 made 471 whp (pretty close to 550 engine hp) with a mild 227/232 114+1 cam and 30 less cubic inches. It’s very daily driveable … I’ve done 2500 mile road trips in it.

If you really care about street manners, it seems you could get away with a **lot** less cam than a 240/252. That has 22 degrees of overlap on a 112 LSA. Even with 408 cubes, I can’t see that being daily friendly at all.

I’m speaking from experience right now with a stroker 403 and a 22 degree overlap cam. Tuning this cam to be street friendly and act nice isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do. I’m on my second tuner in 6 months already trying to get the cam to be more street friendly. The first tuner is on of the best tuners in this country for stock pcms for f bodies. My second tuner is extremely smart and very good with tuning and still is having a tough time with it. If you want something more street friendly you have to knock the cam specs down and go with less overlap. He even suggested something is the 238/242 on a 114 or 115 if I want better street manners

How much compression?

Cam in my 402 is 243/249 .675/.675 with 1.8 rockers. Has 18* of overlap and was spec'ed around a 4400lbs TBSS as a "hot street" setup. With Mamo 235 heads it made 660+ on the engine Dyno.

Not entirely apples to apples, but I used a Comp 238°/242° on a 114 LSA in my LS7. Reason being I already had it. But with the LS7 rockers being 1.8s, lift went from .603/.610" to .638"/.646". I was pleasantly surprised when it dyno'd 617hp@6,300rpm, and 565ft/lbs@5,000rpm. I've always thought, and read, that the LS7 likes a lot more split. Don't be thinking it lost a lot of low to midrange torque, either. It was over 500ft/lbs by 3,500rpm. It was over 440ft/lbs from 2,000rpm up. 12° overlap, and it drove excellent. With only 3 more cubic inches per cylinder than a 402, I'd think the 402 would tame the cam nearly as well as an LS7. 416 would probably be nearly identical. I'd try posting the sheet, but the MOTHER _ _ _ _ing MICE ate the dyno sheet!!!! Little bastardo's!!!!! Anyway, that 238/242 cam would be a good choice, in my .02......

compression is 11.58:1, quench is .043 and the heads are trickflow 235 with 1.7 rockers. I know which setup is yours I’ve read your build post and it’s a wild little motor!

My 403 LS2 is running a 239/247 off the shelf comp (around 0.620" lift), with 11.8:1 on AI 243 heads. Runs great on the street in my lightweight vette. Not too difficult to tame it.

For true daily drivability, small converter and freeway gears, go with a cam motion torquey stroker. It will meet your goals and drive very nice. It will lope pretty good if you idle it at a lower rpm. I'd bet cam motion would recommend the same if you asked. Give them a call.
