Default Ticking after cammed ls1

Hi. I bought a Corvette C5 which has modifications:

- Street Sweeper HT Cam 228/232 .600/.612 111 LSA
-Lunati Dual Valve Spring Kit
-JP Double Roller Timing Chain
-Manley Chromoly Pushrods
-Comp Cams LS Trunion Upgrade Kit
-Powerbond Underdrive Crank Pulley
-Long tube headers OBX with hiflow cat
-Corsa Exhaust
-SLP Blackwing Cold Air
-Precision Industries 3400 Stall Converter
-Tea Stage 2 ported 243 heads
-Fast LSX 92 intake ported and ported LS2 TB
-42lb injectors
-AI 226 ported 243 heads - CR 11,1

I found a thread on this forum of the previous owner so I know what modifications it has. However, I am concerned about the ticking sound from the engine. I can hear the exhaust manifolds buzzing, I can also hear the work of the changed injectors, but my mechanic believes that the sound is made by lifters. He thinks this is normal after changing to a sport camshaft and double valve springs. The car has already done 12,000 miles since the modification. I have done 6,000 miles with this car.

I recorded a video. Please take a look.

Sounds like normal engine noise all around to me.

I agree. LS engines do make more valvetrain noise than what sounds normal with other engines

I have a cam motion titan 4 cam with Lunati link bar lifters, and PRC heads w/dual valve springs, and mine sounds like a sewing machine even after much fiddling with push rod lengths. But it runs great, pulls like a rocket, and I'm just going to let it eat.

I disagree... It dosen't sound good and you need to investigate further or don't and let it eat until it rears its ugly head.

Pulling a valve cover and checking for loose rockers is fairly easy.

I just pulled a valvecover on my gto for this same reason. Fired up an engine that I had done heads and cam on several years ago, but just now finished putting the car back together enough to fire it up. I have carbon fiber valvecovers, and I vaguely seemed to remember the stock cam and heads had more noticeable valvetrain noise without aluminum covers to dampen the sound. However, now with around .570 lift, it sounds like I stole the sewing machine factory. I thought maybe I forgot to check pushrod length or something years ago, but everything was tight and I got between 1.25 and 1.5 turns from zero lash until the rockers bottomed down. I guess some of these cam lobes are just noisemakers.

You are opening a big can of worms with that question. I will just say that I am not concerned about the preload on my lifters after checking them. A search will have results on this site ranging from statements that 3/4 turn is enough to other statements that you need over 2 turns, and the reality is that what you need is an adjustable pushrod to get zero lash, then add the length that corresponds to the preload range specified by the lifter manufacturer to determine what to put in. Going by the number of rocker bolt turns is just a quick and dirty inaccurate check.

Another thing that dual springs are supposedly more noisy than single springs.

Gametech, I hope you are using aftermarket rockers on your engine. .570 is too much for stock LS1/2/6 rockers, not sure about LS3 or LS7 rockers.

I am curious why you think that is too much lift for stock rockers. People have been going over .600" lift on stock rockers for a couple of decades now.

.570" lift is no problem for stock rockers. Neither is .600" lift. I ran a cam with .600" lift in an LS1, Darton 427 for 30,000 miles. Rockers were never a problem, even though the guy at AFR shimmed the dual springs installed height nearly .100" too stiff!! Never any trouble, even with stock trunions.....

When you revved it up, it sounds like something in there, at least on one cylinder, is clunking a bit. IDK.....So hard to tell in a video, no matter how good it is. I agree with others on LS engines being noisier than we have become used to. However, considering even a stock LS1 comes with lift that would've been considered a "street cam" in the Gen1 SBC, I guess it's not that bad. Wish I could help more.....

My bad, I was thinking .670 not .570. You're good.
