Default Priming oil before first startup

So recently I had to pull the heads off of my LQ4. the engine has been sitting for 4 years in a garage. When the engine is good to go for startup I want to prime the oil system. I'm just a little confused about how the oil priming trick works. I know you have to undo the plug to the pump on the side of the block, and you use a weed sprayer full of oil to pump oil in to lubricate the system. What i'm a little confused about is do I fill the pan prior to priming the system and drain a little out if there is to much oil after using the priming method. or do I drain the oil, and then fill the pan using the priming method along with lubricating the internals. Sorry if i am not making it easy to understand i'm just a little confused on what I have to do with the priming system.

Leave engine about a quart low. After priming and starting engine, recheck the level. Should be close

So drain the oil, replace the filter, fill the engine with oil a quart lower than required. Then do the priming process and the level should be in the round about level area correct?

Pre-fill the filter with oil. It will save you a lot of time here, if your dead set on priming it.

New battery, some fresh fuel and started it.
You should be in the same boat..

Did you change the oil pan and are unsure of the new oil capacity? After doing h/c swaps, I change the oil before 1st start. I fill up oil filter, add to top hatch marks on dipstick.. Then unplug the harness for coil packs and remove relay for fuel pump and let the starter do its job spinning the motor. After 15-20 seconds.. Should be good. Although you may not see a difference of oil level on dipstick, but oil system has oil in it. Oil# always goes above 40psi within a second or 2

this LQ4 is in a 66’ olds cutlass. We did have to change the pan out and I’m not certain of it’s new capacity. I haven’t drained the oil yet. I’ll find out what pan it is. Where is the relay for the fuel pump?
