LS1 street cam options
i'm looking for cam reccomendations for the ls1 in my 2002 camaro z28. goal is 400whp or 500 crank hp whichever is easier. I daily drive the car right now so i'm looking for something with decent street manners. I don't plan on revving it past 7k rpms as I plan on keeping the stock bottom end. it will be revved near 7k often though on spirited weekend drives. other mods i plan on doing are 1 7/8" long tubes, bigger injectors, trailblazer SS intake, and a manual swap. heads I haven't chosen yet. want to keep the 3.73 gears any help is appreciated!

400rwhp translates more to 460flywheel hp which most LS1 engines with cam/headers/LS6 or Trailblazer intake can make. Ported heads will add 30-40rwhp combined with some more compression. Once you drop another $1K+ on a FAST/MSD intake will you gain another 10-20rwhp. More cubic inches makes it a lot easier (6.0 shortblock) to make n/a power. To squeeze out the last few drops of HP staying n/a gets expensive!

Im using a Summit stage 4 truck cam, 226/230 .550 lift with cheap ls6 springs, car weighs 3600 plus and runs 11.3’s @ 118 at the track, math says it’s making 400 whp. The cam seems to make more low end than stock and the car drives great, still gets mid 20’s mpg with 3:42 gears and an automatic.

Thank you for your patronage. The SUM-8707R1 is .600/.600, 226/238, 113+3 with 6* of overlap. The planned mods will be a nice addition to the cam. With an auto, it likes a 2,500+ converter but we see you're going to a manual so you'll be good with the 3.73 gears. It'll have a nice steady lope but be easy to tune and live with. Pair the 8707R1 with our .600" lift beehives or the Trickflow by PAC .660" duals and it will be happy out to 7,000+!

You'll want some upgraded pushrods. With the 8707R1, we typically see a 7.400" or 7.425" pushrod used. Things can vary so we always recommend measuring for pushrod length before purchasing pushrods. If you don't already have a pushrod length checker we offer the Trickflow TFS-9501. We recommend a minimum 5/16" Chromoly pushrod with a .080" wall. You can typically find a set of 16 for around $100. From there you can get into a thicker wall or larger diameter pushrod. For excellent stability and strength check out our 11/32" HDR pushrods with a .120" wall. These have 25% less stress and 28% less deflection than a typical 5/16" x .080" wall Chromoly pushrod.
We like your plan for a trunnion upgrade and the ported 243/799 heads. We have bushing and bearing options in our brand as well as rockers fitted with a trunnion upgrade.
We'd also suggest new lifters. We offer Morel 7717 drop-in lifters with new trays as part number SUM-HTLSKIT3.
As a while you're in there mine as well get a new chain. We offer the CMB-09-0029 cam installation kit that comes with a new chain and the gaskets and seals needed for a cam swap.
To top it off we'd recommend a timing chain dampener. The LS1 didn't come with one. Trickflow offers the TFS-K30675600 timing chain dampener with an adapter bracket to help keep tension on the chain.
This will be a nice combo once it's all together. Let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

@Summitracing what size injectors would you guys recommend for this application? also will I have to upgrade anything else in the fuel system such as the fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator? what about ignition? can I use the stock coils or should I upgrade? thanks for all the info this makes getting a plan together alot easier!

In what way are the 2 cams similar??? The ASA cam is .525" lift last I knew, vs the .600" lift of the cam mentioned here. BIG difference. The 110° LSA vs the 113° LSA are also VERY different. Only the duration figures are similar, IMHO. BUT, I've been wrong before. Also, IMHO, the ASA cam is a 25 year old lobe design, and it fails miserably when compared to modern lobes for street OR performance use. My .02
