Default What lifters would you run?

6.0 lq4 bottom end, 823 heads, L92 intake manifold.

This is one of those peace of mind questions. I’m eyeing Johnson 2116 lifters but mannnn they’re expensive. My truck won’t see over 4000-4500. I’m paranoid about a lifter turning. I work as a service advisor so it’s relatively common. I’ve seen it several times over the last few years on just factory motors.

are there any more economical link bar lifter options than the 2116 lifters? I don’t mind spending the money but if I can save a few hundred I will.

That’s up to you if the premium is worth your piece of mind.

At those rpm’s I’d run brand new legit gm trays, and probably some morel drop ins and not worry about it.

yeah just talked to cam motion. They always recommend link bars. He said the morel 5290 lifters are a viable good middle of the road option for my application.

I would probably run morel 7717s or cadillac racing lifters. One speed shop said they only ever saw one failure with the cadillacs.

Nobody needs racing lifters for 4,000-4,500rpm. I'd go with GM lifters and GENUINE GM trays. There are 20+ year old LS1s with 300,000-400,000 miles on them. I've had several cams with 160lb seat, 420lb open dual PAC springs, and I've NEVER had a lifter turn. But then I buy GENUINE GM trays right AT THE GM DEALER. Current combo in my LS7 has .650" lift, 170lb/430lb PAC duals. I'm running the 2110R Johnson drop ins with GENUINE GM trays. My .02.....

this, stock are more than adequate for 4500rpm, im assuming with that low of rpm youre not running much camshaft either, just get new factory lifters or morel 7717 if youre really paranoid and new OEM trays and done

Must be a towing build as you are leaving alot of meat on the bone in the upper rpm range. What is this going in?

I've had nothing but good luck with the stock GM lifters and trays. My builds are pretty mild. My 98 Wrangler has a LS6 swap with stock GM lifters and trays. 15 years on the swap with zero issues.

Get GM genuine trays from a dealership or BTR. Amazon is filled with Chinese crap that's being passed off as GM genuine parts, they're not at all.

Johnson 2116 lifters are waaay overkill for that kind of RPM.

Currently, I am running stock replacement lifters, push rods, LS6 springs with a small cam in a 5.3 and it has been fine making an occasional pull to 6300rpm. Since it's a 4wd Yukon it very seldom sees anything over 4k rpm. So, yea you don't need link bar racing lifters for this application.

As seen repeatedly above, and it can't be stressed enough, ALWAYS use GENUINE GM lifter trays for OEM-style (non-link bar) lifters.
For your usage, GM LS7-style lifters are plenty. They are the default LS replacement lifter since being intro'd on the LS7 long ago.
