Default 224/224 114 with advance for my mods???

My mods are listed below - the main thing perhaps being stock 3.23 gears with a SY3500. I have a set of 5.3 AS S2 heads with 978 springs on the way and I've decided on a 224/224 581 581 114 cam for my A4, but I am wondering if I should leave the cam "as-is" or to advance it by about 4 degrees (ground in)?

I know that will bring the powerband down a little in rpm with the advance and perhaps flatten it somewhat. Would that be more optimal with my TC? Would the difference be negligible? Should I just stay with the typical 114 with no advance?

Thank you.

I say stick with the typical, because they already have advance ground in, even if you don't specifically ask for it (most cams from comp cams/made by compcams for vendors are like this).

That I didn't know. How do I know what IS built in? Is that on the cam spec card?

Are your heads milled at all? I have a set of LS6 heads coming that will be milled up to .030", and the TSP 224 cam you are referencing is basically the biggest cam I can stick in there without having piston-to-valve clearance issues.....and this is with -0- advance on the cam. So, be careful of your clearance!!

I actually think they are ground with 4* advance. it should show on the card - do a search to see if you can find any cam card images....

Thanks grimes.

redhawk, they are 5.3 L heads, so they are not milled for any extra compression.

If you buy from thunder racing, they grind in 4 degrees advanced. If you get an adjustable timing set, you can put in more advance, or retard it some.

You'll need to clarify which cam you're getting - one from TSP or TR? The TSP does not have any advance ground in it.

Comp cams 224/224 581 581 114. I'm 99% sure that's the same as TSPs, Speed Inc. etc... Thunder doesn't have a cam of those specs.

It has 0 advance ground into the cam. If I were you, I would leave it at 0 advance, and take advantage of the flow of your heads in the upper rpms. It'll handle 6800 rpm, and that cam will peak around 6300.

Thanks redhawk. The head builder (Jay of AS) suggested that I go for the 4 degrees of advance, so I am just feeling around for other suggestions, etc...

Anymore input/suggestions are appreciated.

Really? Interesting. Jay is doing my set of LS6 heads, although they will be milled .030". Doing this prevents me from advancing the cam, and according to him the 224 on 114LSA will "barely" fit without piston-to-valve clearance issues...
