MTI cam swap-G1 or R1"??
I am on a quest to run 10.90's this winter and I am looking at these cams to help me reach this goal. The G1's spec is= 228/232-.588/.575:114 and the R1 is= 232/236-.575/.578:113 which one to choose?
I swapped rear end's from 3.42's to 3.90's and my B1 cam seem to fall flat now above 6400 rpm. Thanks for any help you can give.

This is for a 346ci NA engine? I don't think I'd go with so much exhaust duration.
Why not the X1? I think it would make pretty much the same HP as the R1 with better drivability.
(The LSA is 113 on the G1 and 114 on the S1, fwiw.)

MTI was not wanting to fly cut my pistons and they felt one of these cams would give me the power and torque I need to run 10's. I have MTI's old Stage II R heads w/2.055 valves. What is the down side to running with exhaust duration this high?

The only downside to the extra exhaust duration is increased overlap which effects your idle and drivability somewhat. It'll still make just as much power as if it were a single pattern or reverse split cam, all else being equal (it might even make a little more power up top due to the increased scavenging effect of the extra overlap.)

BTW, the R1 is an ancient design that was originally intended for 422ci engines. I used to run it in my 422. I later upgraded to the first S1 cam ever ground. That cam went 9s on motor.

I really like the r1 . It might be an old design but it works great. I gained a good amount of hp over my tr230 cam. At some points as much as 26 hp and averaged about 15hp gain from 4500 - 6500. Plus I have mine on a 112+4 and I make peak power at 6100 rpms and it pulls through 6800. I also like the fact that its not as hard on the valve springs as some of these larger lift cams and cams with more agressive ramps.

Nice times" MTI talked to me about these two cams" G1 & R1 . The G1 is a new grind that they said makes good power over my B1 and they said the R1 would give me the power I was needing for 10's also. The X1 would require fly cutting because I have the stageII R heads with the larger valves.

Talk with the gang at MTI, they'll do you right.

What gear & converter size do you guys use"? I have the Yank SY4000 & 3.90 gears. I may upgrade to the harder hitting ST4000 .
