LS1 to LS6 PCV system conversion howto inside
I finally got off my lazy butt and did the LS6 PCV conversion on my 99 LS1. Total cost was about $65, you only have to buy 2 GM parts (there was a list of four parts floating around the net), and 10" of fuel line hose. The whole job took me 4 hours from start to finish (I did it one night after work, and this car is my daily driver), and I'd never done it before nor did I know how much to grind off. It should be pretty quick for anybody to do now with the full set of instructions.
The LS6 system definitly appears as if it'll at least get rid of a portion of the PCV oil consumption, I'll have to see how my car is down the road. The main reason I did it was because it was cheap, and I didn't like the LS1 style PCV hose taking up the very little amount of space I have between my firewall and my intake manifold (its really tight on a C5, more so than an F-body).
Anyway, here it is....pass it along if you see somebody that needs it.

As a side note, I did the same LS6 pcv swap and noticed no difference in oil consumption. There is still oil being sucked in
Some cars are going to be burning a portion of their oil due to rings. Others will be burning more due to the PCV. I have no doubt I'll still be burning oil, however, this should keep more of it from getting sucked in through the PCV. I'll pull the manifold off in a week and check the intake ports for oil.
This mod won't stop all oil consumption, nor will it stop all oil getting sucked in. It will definitly help a bit and it's pretty cheap. Each car is different.

...and a side note. (By looking at the pics) For $65 will it change my F-body to a C5 too?
...just kidding.

Thanks for taking the time to do a proper write up. I just got all my ls6 pcv stuff in today and am about to do it. Your guide will help alot.
Very impressive!
Add another thank you for your time and effort in that very well documented write up. I'm sure it will help quite a few members here.
Thanks once again man! Keep up the good work!

Thanks yall, I'll definitly continue doing these writeups as long as people want em. The only thing slowing me down is cash flow to buy new stuff to document
Nicely done. Right now Im using the heads and cam howto for a cam swap. Its such a big help.
Those howto recipes make modding the ls1 as easy as baking a batch of cookies.
Thanks a lot jMX

Excellent writeup, it came in very handy tonight when I did my conversion.
However, I have a very interesting question...
I have a 2000 f-body and I did not have that spot on my block that I had to cut? I was under the impression that only the f-bodies starting in 2001 or 2002 when they got the LS6 blocks did not have that spot to cut and the earlier years 97-00 had to cut? Now my car was a late build 2000 (June 00) so did I possibly get an LS6 block as well? Just a strange occurance. I took pictures that I can post later after I get them developed.

Can 2001 and 2002 Fbody LS1s benefit from this upgrade, or do they already have the LS6 PCV system from the factory? I thought I heard somewhere they did.
Dug, Thanks
Nic, interesting, there are a few LS1 blocks out there I think. Every year seems to be a little different. Some blocks are tapped for a timing chain dampner, some have the chunk of aluminum, some dont, some are made of the darker metal, some arent. Kinda hard to predict what cars will have what. Either way, good thing you didnt even have to dremmel! I'll make a note on my page that some 2000's wont need the dremeling.
Cal, its really easy to tell. Look at my writeup, see if you have one short PCV hose like I show at the bottom of the install, or if you have the longer hose that goes back to the rear of the valve covers. It'll take you about 10 seconds to check. All LS1's from what I've seen have the LS1 setup. I've not checked a 2003 vette yet.

Good write up as usual!
I wonder why some of us have so few issues w/oil consumption (talking basically stock engine), and some have major probs. My car seems to waffle a bit, having SOME oil consumption by the PCV on long trips in hot (+90) weather, where I'm on and off the pedal a lot. Other times I've driven 200 miles of back roads in -superfast- time and saw the stick drop not one iota. :weird:

OK, I see the hose you're talking about. I've got the LS1 system, of course. I think I might try you're conversion; I'm only going about 1200 miles on a quart of oil. I drive a lot of twisties on the way to work; I think that's slinging the oil out into the valve covers.
I guess I'm doing this conversion the hard way - take out the LS1 and put in an LS6!
I think I am going to continue to use my catch can just to see if the LS6 has the same problem with sucking oil. Don't want to carbon up those nice new heads!

Another great write-up Jon! The only thing I do differently is use a brass hose barb and two little screw clamps to connect the hose to the PCV boot.
Also since the block is cast, you dont have to cut all the way through the sides of the piece, just the front. Then insert a 3/8" extension in the hole and give it a few taps, should crack it off.
jmX,
Just checked out the rest of your how-to's - Great site!! I am sure you have provided a great help to many out there who were afraid to jump in to some of these mods - and at a great amount of time invested on your part! Thanks for giving up so much to help others!!
