AS S2.5 5.3 or AFR 205?
Posting up for a friend, the AFR’s can be had for about 2200 and the AS’s for about 1900 or so. Money isn’t a big issue, so what would you say he should get?
This is for a 02 LS1 with all boltons less intake/tb.
thanks!

From what I have read, the AFR's might flow a little better. But the AS's are a better deal at the price they are at, and thats what I have. If money is not a issue, then he might as well go with the AFR's. Its a 02, so he already has a LS6 intake. If he has enough money, he can just go with the AS heads, and get the ported LS6 intake($500) from Jay. Does he have a cam on it?

Well... What about the 205's CNC ported vs the 2.5's from absolute.
How much are the 'as casted' heads? Because if you spend 2000 for the heads and 1500-2000 more for porting, that can be some very expensive HP.

This thread has more in depth porting done by TEA on AFR

Not that it helps any, but…
When I ordered the ‘re-valved’ shocks from ‘one’ of the sponsors, it took over 6 weeks to receive them. Then I ordered my KooKs from another sponsor and it took them a little over two months to ship them.
I ordered my 5.3’s from AS a little more than 3 weeks ago and I haven’t heard anything.
I guess it’s anything that’s custom or just a major part that takes forever. I ordered my plugs and MSD wires from thunderracing.com and had them the next day!

Thats for sure, we defentially need some additional test dummy's.
From what TEA has told me on the phone and said here on LS1tech their stage 1.5 5.3 heads will make nearly identical dyno numbers as the AFR's will make. With that being said the stage 2.5 5.3's from TEA or AS should make a little more power.
I can say wait is in your future if you order from AS, but probally not 3 months. 1 month is more likely. The 6.0 CnC program as said before is where Jay gets the downtime. The 5.3's are much easier to complete.
I say the stage 2.5's are a better bang for the buck, and as far as which head will produce more power that is probally a toss up.
The AS heads will probally flow a little better but have a larger runner volume.

They have done some preliminary testing on a cast ported head. You don't think that is a good report?
These are the flow numbers from our Bare AFR castings with our Stage 3 CNC program and blended by hand. After completion the Intake Runner is 238 cc's. These were flowed at 28" of water and on a 4.000" Bore. We feel that the AFR castings will help alleviate most of the head gasket issues that everyone has had in the past. The price will be $2,995 for these heads, complete and ready to bolt on. We are going to work out all the specifics and breakdown the parts list in the morning. The first pic is the shot of the AFR end stamp and intake runners. The second is of an intake bowl port after the CNC Stage 3 program has ran and the last pic is of the hand finished bowl and combustion chamber. Enjoy

That’s an extremely large intake runner though. Just a guess, but I would think most other heads ‘could’ flow the same if they were opened up that much. The AS S2.5 5.3 heads flow 318@.600 with a 22X cc intake runner that still provides decent port velocity.
I would also say that the AFR should be more compared to the LS6 castings that from AS in the S2.5 form flow 326@.600.
Plus 3k for CNC ported heads is pretty steep. I’ll be interested to see a set of these on a stroker motor though.

Get the CR up (11:1>11.2:1), run a 224 XE-R and you get a package that will make more power than a bigger cam with whatever stage 5.3's. to me that is a good compromise.

How much does AFR pay you?
I think they are good heads, but everything has it's limits.
I am building a forged stroker 422 next summer and I'll use hand ported AFR's for that setup, but it's also going to run 11.5:1 compression. Until then, I guess we will just wait and see.

What all are you planning for your car? We should do a direct comparison to see what’s up with AFR and AS.
The only performance mods I have thus far are the headers, catted Y and MTI lid. With this I’m putting down 334/344, not bad for three mods.
I have ordered and am waiting on AS S2.5 5.3ltr heads, either a custom grind cam from one of the board members or the F13 cam. I already have YT roller rockers, rollmaster adjustable chain, ASP under drive and SLP cold air waiting to be installed at the same time.
I am going to degree my cam and get a slightly thinner head gasket so I can hit 11.0:1 compression. Since mine is a 02, I’ll be running the factory LS6 ‘style’ intake.
We will see what this setup does well built and adjusted with a good tune, then I’m going to add a FAST intake and TB to the setup with some N20.
Anyhoo, we shall see I guess.
