what size spring shims with hotcam kit?
You can use either shim, but the tech who did my install definately liked the LS6 shims that came with kit better than the LS1[stock] shims
Have had cam in over 2years,love it.

I have a 2000 TA with stock LS1 heads.
A friend of mine bought a set of new CNC heads that came with LS6 springs. He does not need the springs, because he is going with heavier duty ones for his cam....
I know that the Hotcam kit comes with LS6 springs and shims. I was planning on purchasing the cam only (off of another member hopefully...) so I would imagine I need the shims to complete the setup...
CHIKN,
"If you bought 02 LS6 springs they dont need shims. "
Are the "02" LS6 srings different than other LS6 springs?
Thanks!

PS This is confusing! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
....are you confusing spring seats with shims?
The seats are those black tall steel things under the springs...at the top of the seat is a rubber valve seal...
...shimms are like washers to adjust the spring pressure/hieght...
The HOTCAM kit comes with SHIMS not SEATS!
So I assume I need shims with my heads....
All I want to know is what size (thickness) shims come with the HOTCAM kit but no one has answered me!

...or are you saying the Hot cam requires a higher spring pressure and therefore the shim is needed to increase the LS6 spring rate/height?
...i suppose you could just use the LS6 seats and LS6 springs and avoid the shimm issue altogether......the Linfelter spec sheet (tag) that came with the heads says the LS6 spings are good to .570 lift!!!!
..the sdpc ls6 heads have 2002 seats, springs and valves...

So what are they?!?!?

who sells the complete kit so you could see a picture of the kit? ...i saw somthing on this in SDPC site ...I think...
See above SDPC picture of the Hot Cam and discription of the complete cam kit...
...it says it uses 2001 LS6 springs....no mention of shimm, however,,,it looks like the round things in the picture are stock retainers ...but i suppose they could be shimms...

2001 LS6 springs are a good bit shorter than 2002 and need shims in an LS1 head. The 2002 springs dont need shims at all to work on an LS1 head.
You can use the stock spring seats with no shims in your LS1 head with 2002 springs.
I would hate to do 16 spring swaps wrong...
Tommy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
PS Why do they have to go around changing springs sizes! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
However, it still does not fully explain why the shimms are needed when installing 2001 LS6 springs in a stock LS1 head....
...You might call the technical hotline at SDPC; they are very knowledgeable about this stuff...
The LS6 ported assembled heads are part number 88958622.
The Lingfelter tag has a January 2003 production date.
Tell them your LS6 springs are pea green in color (UHG!) and they do not have shims only a black spring seat...

YOU SAID IN REPLY:
Sure it does, the shims set the shorter springs at the correct installed height. Otherwise the seat pressure of the spring would be very low.m

I'm totally confused now.
I thought if the LS1 valve length is shorter than the LS6 valve lenght, then the shorter 2001 LS6 spring would not need to be shimmed. In other words, a shorter 2001 LS6 spring should not need to be shimmed in a LS1 head with a shorter LS1 valve.
Using your logic, a shimm would ONLY be necessary if you tried to install a 2001 short LS6 spring in a 2002 LS6 head with a long valve.
I'm I from Mars and are your from Earth or visa versa?
Thanks ...cause this seams like rocket science!
While you are at it, please tell me if the longer LS6 valves in an LS6 head will require shorter pushrods if installed in an LS1 engine assuming no change in cam base circle diameter....
...the answer is slightly more complicated since my LS6 heads are milled .055 but lets ignore this variable for the moment....
ThanX...

LS6 CNC Ported Assembled Aluminum Cylinder Heads
Price: $985.00
Part # 88958622
Best buy on the planet! Unbelievable performance from fully CNC ported cylinder heads. Some of the best low and mid-lift numbers we have ever seen from a stock size valve. These heads will flow over 200cfm at 0.300" lift and 290+ at 0.500". Fully assembled with the 2002 Z06 light-weight valves and the new '02 valve springs. These heads have been milled 0.055" to bring the combustion chambers back down to approximately 60cc. Care must taken to check pushrod length and proper intake installation when using these cylinder heads. Price is for each cylinder head.
(Too bad I still didn't get the answer to my original question!) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

[shims] definately seat the new spring better.
I assume they were designed for it & should be used! As far as what the thickness, ? You could call a local GM dealer & the parts dept. might be able to tell you. [01 LS6 valve spring shim]
Bottom line if you are going to run "hotcam" you need the 01 LS6 springs & shims !
