I say it will do fine as long as the bottom end isnt fresh. I love synthetic but not in a fresh engine. BTW, I run 10w30 Royal Purple.

I am running 5w30 RP in it now,but to thin for getting way to much oil consumption(1quart800/1000miles)so I figure straight 30 would help that

Do you know were the oil is going? Check your rocker arm bolt holes, ported heads remove the bump and oil can seep through the threads. Also check your pcv system, most people just vent the crank case into the atmosphere.

If you want something thicker, why not use Royal Purple's Racing 41? It's viscosity is more like a 10w40 and it works very well in hard driven LS1s.

This is the first I've heard of not using synthetic on a fresh bottom end. (Maybe have heard it but never paid attention until now.) I am putting my block together next week with all new bearings but using the stock crank, rods, and pistons. Should I be wary of using synthetic when it goes back together? I usually use Amsoil, weight depends on the time of year.

Sorry Pro Mouse, not trying to hyjack your thread, just caught my eye and am concerned.

$50,000 Corvettes come brand new from GM with Mobil 1 synthetic......

Using breakin oils or normal oil will shorten the time it takes your rings to seat, but I have always followed GM's example in their more expensive flag ship cars and used the synthetic after the 1st oil change.

Patman,Did you run this oil in your Fomula?and how did your consumption go?RP 5w30 works great for the first 1500 miles or so,hardley go through any,but when it breaks down through the last 1500 miles wow does it start eating itI dont think my engine ever broke in properly?I think my Oil Rings are Junk,This car has had leakdown test down all was fine,And if my Compression rings were bad I dont think I would be pulling the HP in my sig.So the RP Racing 41 will Hold up alot better? Thanks!

I have been breaking in my new engine with 10W-30 as speed inc, and the dealer recomended. Living in MI, I would be leary of running sae 30 with the cool waether setting in, go for the start up protection of 10W-30 or 10W-40 if you must. Redline....

RP41 will hold up better, it doesn't seem to thin out like their 5w30 does.

I never ran anything but M1 5w30 in my 98 Formula actually. I wasn't doing oil analysis back then. Although the engine seemed to like it, I had no consumption problems with it. (although the following owner reported that it started drinking oil like crazy for him)
