Default Any way to prime motor and get oil pressure on fresh motor before starting it?

I was wanting to prime the motor and the only thing i could think of was unhooking the coils and just cranking the motor.

do you think i can get oil pressure just cranking it over like that?

What I always do after my motor hasn't run for a while or after I've done internal work is pull the INJ and IGN fuses, injector and ignition.

Pull the injector fuses so you don't wash the cylinder walls and contaminate the oil.

Then just crank it for 20 seconds or so...

Fuel pump fuse and PCM bat fuse is all ya need. Turn the motor over for about 10 to 15 seconds at a time with a break in between to save wear on your starter. Should have oil pressure within 3 to 4 cycles

I always prime the engine after an oil change. Pull the PCM fuse and crank it for about 5 seconds at a time usually on crank # 3 the oil pressure starts coming up. Then put the PCM fuse in and you're good to go.

Stick with what I said, you will want to pull the fuel pump fuse as well. You dont want to dump raw fuel in your motor with no spark for 30 seconds.

Even filling the oil filter doesn't work immediately. I turned my motor over tonight with the PCM and fuel pump fuses pulled after my cam install. It worked great.

I would pull the spark plugs so there is hardly any load on the motor also make sure that it doesn't flood with fuel either and you should be good to go

Be careful on pulling fuses, and cranking. Was it harlan(?) that did this, and ended up wiping a bearing in the process because it didnt get pressure right away?

think of cold starts every morning. If you have a dry sump, youre fine, but we have wet sumps, and no way to prime the pump with a drill.

I pulled the fuel pump fuse to do this once and the car wouldn't even turn over. I ended up pulling the injector fuses instead and that worked.

By filling up the filter it is about as good as when you start your car in the mornings. Unless you pull fuses before you start your car every time.

I just make sure the oil filter is always filled when I'm doing an oil change..

But for all other starts, I put the key in and turn it, and start the car...

I just disconnect the coil packs for both sides. Makes things really easy. I use Redline oil, so I don't think i really have to worry about priming after oil change. I do fill the filter though.

I believe C4VetteLS1 question was in regard to a fresh motor. I.e. New rebuild, new motor or a motor that has been sitting for a long time. Filling up the oil filter does nothing for this. It is good practice after an oil change because you will get oil pressure faster (time it takes the pump to fill the oil filter). It does nothing for pressurizing the bearings or lubricating the cylinders(whose oil film has drained off or has never seen oil). Given that, the best method would be to eliminate spark and fuel (fuses) and crank the motor over. For those of you doing this after an oil change, that is truly a waste of time, unless of course you wait 6 months before starting your engine after the oil change.
