Patriot cam ok i bought the patriot LS1/LS6 Cam (Billet) 228/224 591/583 112 LSA. i havent bought anything else because im broke, i have a friend that will install for free. can i run my cam with out new timing chain and springs,computer tuning and all that extra stuff? thanks skeeter

I wouldn't recommend running that kinda lift without new springs. You'll probably need hardened pushrods too. As far as the timing chain goes, I've heard of plenty of people using stock. But then again, I know people running the double timing chain too... For something like a cam install, collecting parts piece by piece is fine... I just wouldn't recommend installing them piece by piece.

ok so i need to purchase springs and pushrods to install at the same time, and is their another cam you could suggest maybe i could return the patriot and buy another that wouldnt require all this money? thanks

I did the PP Gold springs, hardened pushrods, and Rollmaster double roller chain. However, after much research, I would say you can use your stock timing chain if you are under 30,000 miles and a good friend of mine has never had any trouble with his high lift cams using the stock pushrods.
so far my cam swap parts list is jwis chain, 1.7 harland sharp rockers, PP dual's, TR hardend pushrods, TSP 231/237 cam. after snatching up all the good deals i think i'm at $900 and as soon as i get my tranny fixed i'l put it all in

So true, JRP. I bought a used cam with used springs - in fact, the only new thing to go in my motor were the pushrods - but with the fluids and gaskets, etc. it ended up adding up a bit (esp. on a college budget). I kept my stock chain but I have a fairly low milage car (35K right now).
I put a like new cam in my motor with new Manley springs and titanium retainers, 30 thou less lift and 8 degrees less duration then the 228 but that still cost me $250 to do those 3.
BTW standard cam doesnt get along too well with stock springs. Need to change springs even on a stocker.
