Q: Detailed differences between F-Body LS1's by year?
Hello,
I'm new to the forum and apologize if I've missed an FAQ on this subject. I'm trying to find out all of the differences, no matter how minor, between the model years of LS1-powered F-Bodies. I'm trying to pick one for a project and the only differences I could find are:
* LS6 intake -- '01 and newer
* EGR eliminated -- '01 and newer (how did they do that?)
* cams -- as per here: http://www.smokemup.com/tech/ls1.php
* exhaust -- manifolds and catalytic converters changed in '00
Are these the only changes? I ask because it's a lot easier to source an older LS1. If I can do so and add the parts to bring it up to current spec, that would be best...
Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks, that's hugely helpful. I've recently read that the LS1 block on pre-2001 engines has a casting boss that makes it impossible to install an LS6 (EGR-less) intake without grinding down the block. Is this accurate? I could only find one reference so I'm a bit skeptical.

where'd you read that . the ls6 intake w/ coolant tubes is a direct bolt on for 98-00 cars. maybe your thinking of the ls6 pcv system in which parts of the block need to be notched.

So I want to make sure I understand: contrary to the post above, the LS6 (or Fast LSX) intake will bolt directly to a 98-00 motor (allowing for the elimination of the EGR) and can successfully retain the LS1 positive crankcase ventilation system, correct?

Sorry, I'm really not that familiar with these motors so I'm asking a lot of basic questions. Can you clarify what you mean by the coolant tubes being modified? My decision process is: can I buy a 2000 motor from an F-Body and with bolt-ons update it to the 2001-02 spec? It sounds like removing the EGR is just a matter of the intake, EGR valve, and manifolds (all of which I plan to do anyway). There is also apparently a cam difference in 2001 which is also not a problem. But I'm not understanding the cooland or the PCV issues--do I have to modify either when I swap the intake? I just need to be sure before I plunk down $4K on a motor.

that thread is 2 years old and from ls1.com, 2 wrongs dont make a right
the ls6 intake and ls6 pcv are two different entities. go to ls1howto.com and you'll seee what the differences are and why you need the new coolant tubes.
word of advice: dont visit ls1.com for "tech"
