Default Thinnest head gasket and/or copper?

What is the thinnest head gasket that can be made? I need something like a 0.015" or 0.020" thick gasket to get my quench down (at 0.065" right now with a 0.045" cometic gasket). I'm going to call Cometic tomorrow and ask them what they can do, but does anyone make a copper gasket for the LS1?

You don't really want a gasket that is too thin. What you need to do, is mill your head.

SCCE makes a copper gasket for the LS1.

Just curious, how could your quench be .065 with a .045 gaskey unless your piston is .020 in the hole? Is this an LS1 you're talking about?

Plenty of folks make a copper gasket, but why copper? SCE, Flatout, Clarke, etc all make copper.

I'm with him. Almost all LS1's are .005-.007" out of the hole. With .045" gaskets that puts you right were you need to be at .038-.040".

A third tally on that one...I've seen .005-.008" out of the hole...

BTW, Predator-Z, head deck heigth (ie: milling) has nothing to do with quench heigth-just compression.

I am sitting at ~0.050" cold but when the engine heats up the block grows some 0.010" to 0.015" and settles in at about 0.060" to 0.065". I called Cometic yesterday and they are going to make me a 0.018" gasket. This will set me a little close when I'm cold but as the engine comes up to temp I'll be in the 0.030" to 0.040" range which is right where I want to be.

That means you're .020" IN the hole (below deck). The very lowest I've ever head of an LS-1 motor being is .005" ABOVE deck. That's lacking some sense...

I agree! I think this is a huge mistake that's going to cost him a motor. There isn't enough clearance with a .018 gasket.

Sure, the block will grow some and so will the pistons

Have you taken a measurement and found them 'in the hole' cold? Are they stock pistons or custom?

this is a custom setup built around a 6.300" rod.......this isn't just your off the shelf 347 or 383 stroker kit

I'm sitting 0.005" in the hole cold.....the pistons have been thermal coated which keeps them from growing much (we had to cut the piston to wall clearance a tad to make up for this).....to give you an idea of how much the block and heads grow, my cold lash (solid roller) is 0.002" and hot is 0.022"......the heads are coated (chambers, exhaust ports, and valves) which is keeping a lot of heat out of them (less growth.....probubly ~ 0.005") so most of the growth is from the block....
