Default Best Rev Limit for stock LS1

for a 2002 ls1 T\A with a4 tranny what is the best rev limit as of now mine is set at 6600 rpm and it seems to be good! many said it would not make any power but seat of me pants it feels like its pullin hard. Hypertech swears 6600 is the best setting and that much power is made till 6600 rpm, they alos say its tested and perfictly fine for somebody like me who is not tring to beat their car just enjoy it within its limitations. WHAT U ALL THINK AND WHY (so i can ask hypertech your reasons) I've found much contversy over this subject and am tring to come up with a consensus so i can figure out weather im beating my car or just opening it up to its full stock potential

Thanks john

It's pointless to take a stock cammed car past 6 grand.

6600?

Not only are you going to break a spring but you're losing so much torque (and hp) at that rpm its not even funny. You're gonna lose more races than you win shifting that high.

You had better have the seat of your pants recalibrated.

My comp cam 224/224 with 581/581 lift on a 112 doesn't freakin spin that high..lol.

I shift at 6150 - peak power for me is 5900.

Put your rev limiter back down to 6200 until you upgrade parts - and 6200 is pushing it.

Im using a pp3 and in the settings also provided by hypertech i went +3 +6 +9 mph increase in shifts the tac reads what looks to be over 6600 rpm when at wot but i guess the stock tac sucks? im open to any suggestions as long as 1 you are very confident in your answer and two you have the knoledge to prove it. i say this beacouse im gonna take your answers and present them to hypertech and the others on the other dside and see what they say and hopefully somewhere along the line ill learn enough to make athe best decsion. as of know im leaning twards +1 +2 +4 shifts with a rev limit of 6300 also if u all know some way i can find out what my stock shift rps\mph are please let me know

thanks for workin with me u'all i really appricate your opnions (it helps me learn) john

Big Brake was your car stock at that time?

I would not be so persistant if hypertech didnt already blast me saing that you all would say this and that they have throughly tested it and found 1 gains in performance and 2 no overly hard wear

just tyin to get to the bottom of this not tring to argue beacouse i sure as hell dont know

Ask hypertech when was the last bolton LS1 they shifted into the 11s <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> THe knowledge here concerning LS1s is much more than hypertech will likely ever know.

I have a 2002 A4. Let me know how long yours lasts with the 6600 shifts. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

o yea the dyon i just saw had a mostly stock ls1 still making over 300 hp at 6300 rpm so it seems that if the car only peaked at 308 and at 6300 its making 300 it would be making good power until atleast 6300 right???

does anybody have a good quality stock dyno so i can look at it and make my own opnion on the power making aspect of this debate. if so send jpr5690@aol.com
thanks,john

6300 RPM is still pushing the limit of a stock valvetrain. The stock springs are weak and you are risking valve float and bent pushrods.

I am glad your engine held together. You can always push your powerband up with cam and springs.

Having the rev limiter set at 6600 doesn't mean the car is actually achieving 6600 RPM before the shifts. His shift points are probably still stock or a little over. I had mine adjusted to 6400 and the shift points adjusted to shift at 6200, and yes the car was still making peak HP over 6200 RPM's.

I don't know why people think the stock cams fall on their face at 6000 rpms...the wide LSA makes for a higher towrue/hp peak...

My 2002 TA with lid/cutout makes 329 RWHP @ 5500 RPMs. At 6200 RPMs, it is still making 310, and the curve is only slowly declining. When I shift at 6200 rpms, I drop back to around 4500 rpms where the engine is only making 285 HP.

The fastest time is about maximizing power under the curve...not shifting at peak HP. When I shift @ 6200 making 310 HP and drop to 285 HP, not only do I lose the gearing advantage of the previous gear, but the engine is putting less HP out. If I could ride that out another couple hundred rpms, to where the engine makes 300 RWHP, and shift into 4700 rpms or so where I am making 300 RWHP, then I would be utilizing the maximum average power output of the engine.

What is my point? In theory, shifting at 6400-6500 RPMs would probably net me the best average HP with a stock cam. BUT, will the stock valvetrain support that RPM safely? I don't know the answer to that.

Here is my lid only dyno run:

thank you soslo my thoughts exactly (just better put) Do you have an idea where i can find the shift points (RPM) that hypertech uses with 3.42 in a a4 tranny if so please let me know i wanna re calbriate to **** all gears at 62 or 6300 with rev limit of 64 but i dont know how much (mph) to increase each shift with the pp3. the only thing it gives me is how much rpm will go up for each additonal mph. and i would use that against the tach but i know the tach is slow i really would like to find this out so i dont have to do the trail n error method with the rev limiter

thanks, john

2001' and newer shortblocks are safe to 6900rpm, however, you may not be making power their. An LS6 revs up their pretty nicely.

I go to around 7500 on my Katech engine. I would think a new LS1 should pull good to 6500!

at the last minute conterversy arrives! so you agree with hypertech then and would shift at like 6500 rpm and revlimit at 6600 rpm in a stock daily driver ls1 trans am. AND not call this exssive wear or stupid from a performance stand point? Please explain !! Back up your point beacouse there is a hell of alot of people saing this is a very dumb thing to do and im caught in the middle now wondering what the hell to do

ps: nice vett
