Looking at the Futral RJ cam.
I am looking at getting the RJ cam from Futral motorsports along with the cam package including the PRC springs and chromemoly pushrods. Is there anything I should look for, or anything that I may run into installing the cam. The car is a 02 Trans Am with full bolt ons, but stock internals. The block is a ls6 block if that matters. I was just wondering what things other's have ran into when doing cam swaps.

Just get the cam, spring kit with retainers, seals, and seats, hardened pushrods, and a cam swap gasket set with the timing chain cover gasket, water pump gaskets, and a new balancer bolt. That should be everything. I just put this cam in my motor, but haven't gotten it installed yet..

For the springs,I did the rope trick.I pulled the plugs and bought some new nylon rope, maybe 1/4" diameter. Made sure it was clean, and filled the cylinder with it, then moved the piston to the top to compress it and hold the valves. Repeated that on every cylinder. I did my cam swap with the motor on an engine stand and turned it upside down to hold the lifters. That was the safest and easiest way for me since it was out of the car.

the dowel rod goes in a specific hole, you can find a picture on ls1howto.com in the ls1 cam swap tutorial. the larry spring tool works well, is $40 bucks. you can find the thread in the Tools of the Trade section.

While not cheap, I have to recommend the crane valvespring tool. It compresses both springs at once and makes the job much less tedious. It's around $115. It's worth it though b/c you're gonna have to change springs again not too far down the road when they wear out. I used the tdc method b/c I found it kinda hard to get the air fitting in the cramped engine bay.
