Default Anyone do a cam upgrade without headers?

If so, please share your results.

I'm thinking about a TSP220-12 or TR224-14 for my 2002 Z06 with an intake only. The gains without headers may not be worth it.

Any comments?

I actually tried this to see what would happen. I had a 2002 Z06 cam in my car with stock heads, stock manifolds, stock cats, stock Y pipe, with a Corsa cat back. Well it ran 12.34 @ 108 as a best. I swapped the cam for a TR224 and ran in simular weather and ran a best of 12.37 @ 108. The next weekend I installed a set of Pacesetter Headers and TSP True Duals and ran 11.85 @ 114 in worse weather... The car just couldn't breathe with the stock manifolds on.

yea i agree, if you can out headers on the car then go through with it! only reason i didnt is because they are so expesive lol! you should do exhaust before you do a cam anyways.

if that ain't proof you NEED headers i don't know what is...cam's just simply need long tubes (and a good intake system)

Do Z06 exhaust manifolds flow better than f-bodys? I know the stock 2.5" Ti exhaust, H-pipe, and cats are as good as the aftermarket units in terms of flow for this diameter.

You can pick up LOTs of power with stock manifolds...you just have to use your head about it. Lots of overlap is a no-no. You want to keep it way less than 0 degrees at .050". You also need to have a fairly big split to the exhaust lobe of the cam.

I think an ideal cam would be a Cam Motion 217/225 .588/.588 113LSA 115ICL. This has -5 degrees of overlap at .050" and has an intake valve closing point of 43.5" degrees ABDC @ .050" which I consider ideal for a 346 wanting to strike a balance between street and strip. Sure headers will allow the engine to breathe, but you CAN make GOOD power with stock manifolds and cats...you just can't use an off the shelf grind.

Interesting cam numbers. What would be the rpm range? How much gain would you estimate in an upgrade from the 02+ LS6 cam 204/218 .551/.547 117.5?

The cam would operate in nearly the same rpm range as the '02 Z06 cam (around 1500-6400). Peak power would be around 6100-6200 and the cam would pull past 6600 (if you ever felt the urge). I would estimate the cam to be worth a solid 20 rwhp over the Z06 cam, but the big news would be the fat increase in the mid range 3000-4500 rpm. The 113LSA would give you a lot more ***** in that rpm range.
