Default ASA cam in a stock LS1 ?

Ok guys..need your input.. heard alot of good things from this board on the ASA cam. So one question, would this be a good cam for a stock LS1 ? not worried about a lopey idle.. and my car is a M6..
or is there a different cam I should look into ?

Thanks

i dont like the low lift it has.. i wonder myself seeing every other car around that size having .580 + what the differences are and if u could make more power with a different cam ya know? also the 110 lsa is kinda low to isn't it?

The ASA cam is a great cam if you want to stay with GMPP. It has a great tq curve, and provides better output than the Hotcam. At 110 lsa and a big split duration, it has a wicked lope at idle (one of the meanest I've heard). Its low lift allows the use of '02+ ls6 springs.

That said, there many cams on the market that will kick the crap out of the ASA cam in terms of performance and driveability.

The hottest out there right now are the FM13, TSP233/233, TSP233/239 (on the mildly large side), the TRex, the TSP MS3, the MTI Y1 (on the very large side).
The TR224 is the benchmark cam. A TR224 will perform as well if not better than the ASA on stock heads.

(in case you're not aware)
TSP= Texas Speed & Performance
TR= Thunder Racing
MTI
FM= Futral

hope this helps.

What gear do you run out back?

PS: The ASA + GMPP CNC LS6 heads would be the H/C combo I would elect if I were to do everything over again (never change springs again)........

Out of all of those cams I would choose the TREX. You must have all supporting mods though including gears. If you are talking about a completely stock car then you may want to grab all of your boltons first.

if you want a cam that you want to change the springs out of every year then by all means go with the t-rex. but if you want a cam where you will most likely never have to change the springs, go with the asa! i am definatly gonna go with the asa cam and a set of gmpp heads just like SouthFL.02.SS said. it is a killer set up!

Yep, the GMPP LS6 heads and ASA cam seem to match up well and run really strong, even though it doesn't have .999 lift lol.

yep, matched parts tend to. and some people wonder why its suggested to flow your heads and get a custom cam spec'd out from there it always performs best that way(matched up).

i have the asa cam and i like it. you never have to change valvesprings and it makes good power. with stock heads and all boltons and no cats expect around 400 rwhp and torque to match on a m6 car. pm me if you have any questions!!!

No.
Unless your testing is only code related.

Terrible. Big duration + slow ramps + 110lsa=drivability problems on stock tune.

Default ASA cam

I just put this cam and LS6 springs in over Xmas. I didn't notice any inprovement over stock until I made a few mods which were..

1) Open up the throttle body butterfly w/ the screw about 1 turn. Theres link on this site just how to do it correctly. Although there seems to be a fine line if the throttle is opened too much it seems to set the "TCS" light and you get a throttle position code error. I think it's P0120.

2) Eliminating EGR w/ HP tuners. This was a big help as I was getting too much exhaust during idle and part throttle cruise. I just have to remove the EGR system this weekend.

3) Pacesetter LT's w/ TSP catted Y pipe. Really big inprovement that got my lowend torque back. Now the car pulls HARD from 2000rpm on up. There's a link if you do a google search under "ASA cam" that is from GM on how the ASA cam needs to breathe. Putting the ASA cam w/ stock exhaust in a Vette only gained 2hp whereas using a low backpressure exhaust system gained 20hp.

I have some more tweaking to do as my LTFT's on the passenger side are rich @ idle and I get some light surging between 1200-1800 rpms. I might have an exhaust leak, bad O2 wire (spliced and soldered extensions).

I haven't dyno'd it yet but I like it. I had put LT4 hot cam, heads, intake on my old '97 WS6 T/A and this setup is definately better. The idle is totally mean too.
