Default Ticking noise...?

First off I have an '00 LS1 with a Comp Cam 224/224 112lsa cam, 918 springs, and replaced the lifters with the Comp stock replacements.

I just purchased the car, so I'm not sure how the previous owner drove the car...but the redline was pushed back to 6800 for the cam so I took it there and then the ticking started. If I let the car sit, the ticking goes away. If I drive it for a while, the ticking comes back. If I drive it hard, the ticking gets louder. It sounds like its coming from underneith the car at the exhaust, you cant hardly hear it from the engine bay.

What do you guys think my problem is? The car still runs smooth and idles fine.

Obvious guess is either piston slap or exhaust leak or slight version of the sewing machine sound.

btw, your cam probably peaks out around 6200-6300.. no point in going all the way to 6800 for future reference either.. 6450-6500 should be a good spot to shift..

with my 224 mine shifted at 6400 and my redline was 6600

with that cam you dont have to rev to 6800-7000 to make power

but check the post about the lifters freezing in this section. Your issue sounds like mine and Cals. Ticking comes and goes outta nowhere. I cant really tell if mines underneath the car or the drivers side head. But his lifter came outta the plastic sleeve and turned sideways, eating up his cam. I havent taken mine apart yet to check. But when mine ticks, if i turn the car off for 5-6 minutes the ticking stops. I can drive for 3-4 hours, or 2-3 days later and the ticking it back. It didnt tick for 2months onetime, now its back. Something about the cam size causes the lifters to come to far outta that sleeve compared to the stock camshaft.

no ticking is good... just sucks cause you may have to tear the motor down to check and make sure. Better safe than 3k(rebuild) sorry 2-3 months down the road

Do you think it sounds like a bent pushrod? A few f-body guys looked at it and thats what they thought it was.

well those would be easier to fix than something else

you will have to take the motor apart anyway, so if one of those got bent then you will find out first thing The car doesnt have chromemoly ones?

I forgot to list that, and yes it does have chromoly rods with around 10k miles on them. So...probably not those.

Hey man, I'm one of the guys that looked at it Sat. night. If it were me, I'd pop the valve covers and check the valve train first since thats easy and will rule out that possibility if everything looks ok. I don't think thats the problem though. After that, I'd do a thorough check of all the exhaust connections to see if there's a leak. Probably the most likely source of the ticking.

BTW, you should post some pics of the car too. Its a bad *** LS1 car (for an import that is )

I just read somewhere that someone had the ticking noise, pulled the heads, and then found out they left a bolt out of the header collector. I would check the exhaust first because its easy and cheap.
