Default Valve Springs and Specs List

I would like a list of all popular valve springs out there for the gen III motors. Everything from 1.29" all the way up to huge solid roller controling springs. I would like to know the diameter, seat pressure (at 1.8"), open pressure, coil bind, and rate. Mods, this might be a good sticky if we get enough information.

It would be good to know the specs of the equipment we are getting in order to make intelligent decisions I think. So lets here them

From what I've seen the patriots are:

1.29" diameter, 140lbs seat pressure, 350 open pressure, don't know the rate, coil bind at 1.090".

You take the coil bind height and subtract if from the installed height. After you do that subtract another .050" because you need about .050" safety margin before coil bind.

Something I noticed about the 918s while looking through and old master catalog is if they don't go into coil bind until 1.085" wouldn't it be safe to run these springs to .665. I guess they don't have enough spring pressure to do this safely.

You probably should include larger diameter and taller springs. Really good springs (for pushrod 2-valve motors) don't come in 1.290" diameter. High lift springs don't come in a 1.770" installed height.

However that is close to the 1.2" diameter of many direct action 4-valve DOHC springs (with a total mass less than an LS1 stainless steel intake).

I am looking for springs larger then the stock pockets. Alot of the higher lift stuff comes in a 1.9" installed heights but they can always be shimmed.

If you remember they used to be advertised till .650 lift untill the 921's came around and then (magically) Comp reduced the advertised lift to .600.
All I know is properly installed with correct p-rod length and lifter preload, i've seen setups with .612 lifts running those with no problem.
I always make sure my motor is nice and warm before I ride, 1> To give the spring the time to reach OP temp, and 2> So my TC will lock up with no problem.
With titanium valves/tit retainers/ seats/ and 918's you can achieve a moving spring mass of 98 grs. with LS6 valves I'm at 114 gr. You know what that means

You can't always shim because the seat pressure is too high. As is the coil bind. Roller springs, such as Comp 26089 & 26099, Isky 9265 & 9365, and PSI 1040s are typically 2.0" installed. Valves are typically sold +.100, +.200, +.250 for SBC. However a much smaller selection is available for the LS1.

I agree with that as well. I did spend some time looking through the comp catalog though and saw a few that would be 200lbs at a 1.8 installed height and still had .700-.750" before coil bind.

As taken from jrp's signature.

1. Comp 918’s: A few years back they had some problems with non-blue stripe springs breaking but they have seemed to rectified the problem. The beehive design is also a superior setup. Your stock steel retainers can be reused with the 918’s but titanium retainers are recommended for lightening up the valvetrain and for strength.

Outside Diameter (O.D.): 1.290"/1.060"
Inside Diameter (I.D.): .885"/.656"
Installed Pressure: 130 lbs @ 1.800"
Open Pressure: 318 lbs @ 1.200''
Coil Bind: 1.085"
Maximum Lift: 0.625"
Rate (lbs/in): 313 lbs/in

2. Manley Nextek: Also a single spring like the 918’s but not of the beehive variety. They are a good spring and come in a package deal from SDPC for 178 and that includes titanium retainers. The springs are rated for up to .600 lift.

Max Valve Lift : .600"
O.D. : 1.255"
I.D. : .830
Installed Pressure : 115@1.750"
Open Pressure : 350@1.175"
Coil Bind : 1.100"

3. Crane Duals: A dual spring setup rated for up to .650 lift. When buying duals you’ll need the dual springs (obviously), titanium retainers, new dual spring seats, and new valve stem seals.

The installed seat pressure is 112 lbs @ 1.800'' with a maximum recommended lift of .650'' at the valve with an accompanying open pressure of 352 lbs. The 1.275'' O.D.

*INFO REGARDING CRANE SPRING REVISION*

4. Comp 921’s: Also a dual spring like the Cranes above and come as a kit with everything you need for installation, rated for up to .650 lift

O.D: 1.300
I.D: .870 (outer spring)
I.D: .655 (inner spring)
135 LBS @ 1.770
400 LBS @ 1.220
COIL BIND @ 1.040
MAX LIFT .650

5. Patriot Gold Duals: See Crane and 921’s. The PP Golds are currently the best direct drop in spring, they are the stand set for the new AFR heads and come on all PP heads. PP are the only genIII spring setup to use the super 7 locks.

O.D 1.29
135lbs @ 1.800
385lbs open
coil bind @ 1.08
.650 lift

My Personal Indepedently tested PP golds:

seat: 143 lbs @ 1.800
open: 363 @ 1.200
coil bind: 1.060
Clearance: .140
spring rate: 367

6. PRC Dual Spring Kit: Kit comes with Dual springs, tit. retainers (using stock locks), seats, valve stem seals. good for up to .660 lift

seat : 140lbs
open: 390lbs
install : 1.800
coil bind: 1.07
1.290 O.D.
max lift : .660
matl : super pure chrome silicone

Nick the patriots and PRC are the same spring, the installed hieghts etc may vary because of lock/retainer choice

Thanks Jeff, that is what has been said before. I checked all my installed hieghts and they are 1.800" to 1.813" which apparently is fairly normal. I've been told that a range under .025" is good.

A tighter spec then .025" is correct, that is why shims are made. You need to shoot for .010".

Can anyone add independantly confirmed weights for each spring assembly? Dont include valve locks as they all will have a minimum of a stock lock. Oh, and no weighing the valve seat either

Pat retainers/springs
PRC retainers/springs
918 retainers/springs
921 retainers/springs
941 retainers/springs
Crane retainers/springs
