the bolt broke @ the top of the blocks theads on the front most lower hole on passenger side. how many of you guys have fixed this? i was thinking i could drill into the bolt and run an exstractor into it, but its a long ways down for a drill bit that size. got any specifics on what tools and where to find them?
i'm sure i can pull the block and take it to a machine shop, but i dont want to if i dont have to. any help you can offer will help.

get a reverse drill bit and start to lightly drill it and the thing should start to come out fairly easy

How the heck did you managed to do that?! Did you clean everything all nicely? Was there just some obscene amount of that orange globby threadlock on it or what?

The GM thread repair kit is J42385-100. As far as I know there is nothing GM offers to remove the broken bolt though. Try Snap-on or a machine shop supply store for a drill bit long enough and extractor.

Where did it snap at. If you remove the rest of the bolts on that head and take the head off will there be some shank above the block? If so use Vise Grips or stud remover.
Now that the top of the bolt is off there should be little compression to keep the rest of the bolt tight in the hole. Whatever run on Tq there is between the bolt threads and block threads is all the Tq required to back it out at this point. If there is no shank protruding out of the block an easy out should do it provided the holes are clean. Good luck!

Glenn sorry to hear about your problem. To get the bolt out you can just go to sears and get a craftsman broken bolt remover. GM doesn't make anything for that. Just be careful, I along with a few friends had the pleasure of doing two Helicoils on a friends block. That was not a fun expieriance. Luckily the bolts didn't break in the block. The part number given above is for the kit you need. The downside it that it costs $460! It comes from a company called Kent Moore. They supply GM with that kit. www.spxkentmoore.com is the website for them. call the number and talk to one of the techs for info. It a pretty straight foward job once you have the kit. The cost does suck though. Hope that helps a bit. Hopfully you can get the bolt out without stripping the block and you won't need the kit.
