Default Need help picking a cam

I wanted to go with the TR224 cam, but its got the spring life issues. I dont want to have to worry about the springs at all.

Here are some cams i picked out. My car is an M6, i need the cam to work well with 85 - 100 dry shot of n20. The car needs to pass smog here in california. Someone let me know which one would be best for my application. Also, which springs should i use? Comp 918s or LS6 Springs?

02+ LS6 Cam
Comp Cams Xtreme RPM Cam 216/220 .525/.532 114 LSA
LS1 GT2 205/212 .540/.540 116.5 LSA
LS1 GT2-3 207/220 .571/.578 118.5 LSA
GM Hot Cam 218/227 .525/.525 112 LSA
220/220 553/533 112+4

I think thats all the cams i have on the list right now. Which cams mentioned above or if anyone can add anything im missing would be best fit for my application. Good drivability, daily driver, never have to worry about swaping springs, and passing california smog. Which cam and springs would work for me?

Any time you use Comp 918's, you need to keep an eye on them. It's not just the cam, but the springs themselves. They are made from a thick, brittle wire. You would have the same spring issues with the GT2-3 as the TR224. But it's not so bad as people make it sound. You could probably go 30k-40k miles no problem on the Comp 918's if you treat them right.

The hotcam is very valvetrain friendly and sounds great. Many have gotten pretty good numbers with it as well.

Check VHP site & the 047 or 062 cam.. It's hot and has plently of torque down low & mid and will pass california emissions testing.

GT2-3 would get my vote.

LPE says you can run LS6 springs or 918's.

The GT2-3 is also a great NOS cam.

Yes, they are the same as the 918's I believe. I have that cam and spring set up in my car and love it. I have noticeable valve train noize, but I also have enough exhaust to drown it out. Let me know if you need more info about this cam.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've got both the AFR/COMP 220/224 cam and the LPE GT2-3 sitting here waiting for install, and I'm probably going to install the GT2-3. I had planned to install the AFR grind, but I got to hear the valvetrain noise on another Comp XER car and it was too loud for my tastes. I'm a little worried about the LPE cam too, but they say it's quiet even with the .578 lift. The intake lobe is pretty aggressive, the exhaust is not. Maybe that's the difference?

How do you know when your springs are going bad, or do just check them every 10k miles or so?

teI would spend the extra money on very good quality spring. Don't go cheap or with ok springs(918, they are good, but).

Buy the 921's, Patriot Gold springs or VHP double spring good till .650 and blanced. They best on the market right now are the Patriot Gold.

I personally have the Patriot's- They work fine!!! I may upgrade/change to the VHP springs because they are harmonically balanced- I'm getting more, typical sewing machine sound/noise with the Patriot's, than i would like, but they are one of the BEST in the market!!!

Yes you can. 918 springs are the replacement springs for LS6 in almost all cases. They handle up to .600 lift safely. I have read and heard of people using both sets of springs past .600 and have no problems, but I don't know about the long term durability.

whats the trap speed for the tr224 114 lsa? Cam only car m6... Also some quarter mile times would be nice...

I searched but didnt really come up with many good times for cam only m6 cars.

Can the stock retainers be used with the comp 918 springs and the tr224 combo?

If you are going to do a cam- Do it right.

Cam, quality springs(921/Patriot/VHP), tit retainers.

Pay now or later when something breaks.

how about the comp 218/224-.527/.535-114, with the 918 springs, should last a while... most of the cams u listed r all on 112lsa's, which probably won't pass cali emmisions... another low lift cam is lunati's 222/230-.534/.544-114...
