Default Cam Swap On Weekend. Will This Lifter Tool Work?

I 've searched for an hour going through all the threads. Finally doing the cam this weekend, I went to the hardware store and the only pen magnets they had were $7.00 each! I bought 2 aluminum rods 1/4" and I'll try those. Some people say the 5/16" doesn't want to slide in one of the holes on some cars, so they had to use the 1/4.

Will I NEED to flat spot the entire shaft? Will the lifters slide past the 1/4" rod? I have everything set, I want this to go smoothly this weekend. TIA

I used a 1/4" rod and it slid right in. Some say a lifter could slide past, some say no way.

Thanks for the reply! I heard that the Thunder tool won't slide in one side on some cars so they had to go to the hardware store to make their own anyway out of 1/4" bar stock for that side. I was wondering, do you think I could slide the 1/4" without having to flatspot the rod first? I was wondering if a 1/4 is enough to not have the lifters slide past.

Just swapped my cam a couple weeks ago. I went to hardware store and got 1-1/4" and 1-5/16" wooden dowels. I got wooden dowels because its much eaiser to be able to bend them when trying to put them in the block. Worked fine, there is no way a lifter is going to slide past unless the laws of physics dont apply where your at. Good luck

Good luck!
I'm still waiting on my ported oil pump.
I went to home depot and bought the 5/16 and 1/4 rods, it was like $3.
Let us know how well they work for you.

After reading many posts, I decided to get a 3/16 steel rod for the left side. I then wrapped it in velcro. It was a nice snug fit. I used 5/16 on the right side and it was perfect.

I only got the 1/4" aluminum for both sides. I was mulling over what to do in a store since my thread searching didn't give "perfect" answers. I'm not going to put velcro or anything, I'm just going to slide them in and......
People do the Russian roulette method all the time and my car is low mile so this is more of an insurance policy. I only have a computer at work, and it's 7:00 -I'm out for the weekend, 'll let you know on Monday. WISH ME LUCK!!! Peace.
