Default '00 LS1 running unusually cool. Stuck thermostat?

My buddy's '00 SS started running unusually cold tonight. The temp gauge never went past the second line on the gauge and didn't get close to the 210 that is usually runs at. Also the heater didn't blow nearly as cold as it usually does. Could this be a stuck thermo? Thanks

Mine never runs above 175 unless it's really hot and I'm in stop and go traffic.

Well, if your thermo was stuck then you would actually get hotter, not colder. If your thermo doesn't open all the way then less coolant can flow thru the motor. I wouldn't worry about the dummy guage on the dash. It is not very accurate. Get a friend to Atap the car and see what the temp is.

Also if the heater is pumping out less than hot air, you might want to check the heater core. It could be plugged. Alot of the radiator flushers on the market will do bad things to the heater core. Just something to think about.

the 99+ LS1 (f cars) the temp gauge is just a dummy light, and should read 210 from the entire operating range.

Only the 98's work.

Could be a stuck open t-stat. It would allow fluid to go through the radiator constantly thus always being too cool. My winter beater had the same problem once. Damn thing took 15 mins to get anything out of the heater, and would only get fully warm if it was idling in place (no air through radiator).

If it was stuck closed, you would be overheating.

I'd replace it, sounds pretty likely that's the cause.

Mine has the same problem and I think it is the thermostat stuck open. Drive it down the road and it does not get over 130 but if you stop for a redlight of let it idle for a while and it gets to 180 fairly quick.

Start it up cold, open the Rad and see if you have fuild flowing through the Rad. If you do then it is open and needs to be replaced.
