Default Do I need titanium retainers?

I recently purchased a Futral F5 cam and am going to put it in next weekend. I don't want to spend too much money on the springs and stuff because I have new heads coming in in a few months. I figure I'll upgrade the springs with some Crane dual springs, but what about the retainers? Car only has 70k on it.

F5 = 224"/228" .588"/.576" 114 LSA

well if your going with the crane duals i believe tit. retainers are your only option, and seeing as how the springs come in a kit form they come with them anyway

What about the Comp 26918 Conical springs? They are good for up to 600 lift.

I'm trying to get out cheap because I have new heads being built now that will have all new stuff on them anyway. My oil pump is going bad and I figured I might as well do the cam while I'm at it.

600 might be pushing it and those futral cams have agressive ramp rates dont they? how cheap do you want to get out? cant you get a set now and use it on the new heads? prc kits arent too expensive, last thing you want to do is replace more things that may brake lol

.588" lift will be perfectly fine on comp 918's. Don't remember if they work with stock retainers....
If you have new heads on the way, can you wait until you get the new heads in order to avoid *wasting* money on springs that won't be used soon? Or if the heads are that far out you could get bare heads and put your own valvetrain (which you buy now and is good) in the heads when they arrive.

I recommend waiting to install the cam with the heads, or getting valvetrain now and swapping over to bare heads, if either of these is possible.

Crane duals can be had w/ steel retainers, I went that option back when the Ti retainers were on backorder and I've been plenty happy up to my 6200rpm rev limit.

918's will work with the stock retainers if you decide to go that route.

How high do you intend to rev the motor? Keep in mind that the lighter titanium retainers will raise that point at which your motor starts to experience valve float by 200-300 rpm. That's a lot of extra leeway and why titanium retainers are well worth their cost.

i would go with the PRC kit, you might be making more power than you expect and might want to stay there for a while.

crane duals are too expensive when you can get a nice set of PRC duals w/ Ti retainers + seats and seals for way cheaper that will do the same (if not better) job

send a PM to Terry@RacetechSpeed , he will getcha a good price on that kit. i have it on my car already, my cam should be going in this summer.

I'm gonna go with the 918s.

Heads are gonna be in in a few months. I have an oil leak in the front of the motor, so I figure I'll take a night and we'll go ahead and do the cam and springs and all that good stuff. I won't be wasting money really either. I can get them cheap because I run a performance parts business and can just reuse them some other time.

get the 918's and the titanium retainers! the titanium retainers seem to hold there value pretty good so resale for a reasonable price shouldnt be a problem

918's used to be rated for .625 lift IIRC. They should be more than enough for that f-5. People have run them on f13s and f14s. If you want some extra piece of mind (dual spring) and maybe a little more performance (Ti Retainer, more spring pressure) go with the PRC spring kit, or the new TEA spring kit which is a few bucks cheaper still.
