Question Changed oil today... strange finding! Motor Oil gurus pls step in..

.. like some of you might know I've been having problems with my LS6 oil pump lately [oil pressure decling steadily] ..

So, anywho, did an oil change today and the used oil [ Amsoil Synthetic ] was really diluted .. almost watery!.. This was after about 3,200 miles of driving on it..

Switched to Mobil 1 5w30 and the oil pressure has been normal since.. atleast today!

Here are my questions:

1 - Are all synthetic oils same [quality] ?

2 - Why did the oil from my car become so diluted only after 3,200 miles [ I change oil every 3k miles ] ?

This was my first oil change since the CAM/LS6 Oil Pump install..

3 - Could it be the cam's nature to cause the oil to dilute ... due to say excessive motor heat ? just wondering...

If so, should I run 10w30 ?

Thanks..

what do you mean by diluted? was it watery or just thin? i know that my oil's not all that thick whenever i change it out with the motor good and hot. if anything i'd say just run a heavier oil.

if it's got water in it then that's a pretty big problem and you should find out where it's leaking at.

oh no no.. I just said watery to describe how thin the oil was when drained out.. no water / coolant in it...

Only way to really find out is to send a sample off to get the analysis done, and a sample of new stuff too, so they can compare. Personally, I run mobil 0-40, after my cam install I have noticed a slight increase in the oil comsumption.. but it allears that it is all going into my amw catch can, so it leads me to believe that the vacum with the cam has changed quite a bit. I changed the oil when I got home from teh install to get the assembly lube and whatnot outta the motor. I've got about 500 miles on the car since the swap, when I get to 1000, I'm gonna change it just to be safe.. pretty overkill, changing mobil 1 after 1000 miles, but I never heard of anyone harming anythign other then their wallet contents by changing oil too often.

DOes the oil have a gas smell ? If so , you might be running real rich and washing the rings down . Just my .000002 cents . . .

Looks like you're pretty close to where I live, and I have plenty of Blackstone Labs sample kits.

If you want to snag one and send a sample of your used Amsoil off for analysis, shoot me a PM.
