My son put a 408 FE short block built by Horsepower Engineering in Houston with AFR big-port heads into our '98 Camaro. At 11.5:1 it will never run any supercharger but it will have a lot of nitrous on it.

On the other hand, I did a compromise on my ZO6: had a C5R block 427 built up for it with only a 10:2 c.r. so I could supercharge it at bit. ((I had a Magnusen on the stock 346 (((10.5 c.r.)) for two years before I replaced it with the 427 - it would run up to 6.5 lbs of boost with no detonation on pump gas: I figured the 10.2 would give me good power initially and I could eventually get at least 7-8 lbs of boost on it , maybe more).
It did not suffer that much N.A. because of the lower compression ratio: 507 RWHP through cats and full exhaust vs. about 525-530 I would have expected at 11:1 (I don't have an extreme cam - driveability and low end torque are the goals). I just put a D1SC on it and have been changing pulley sizes slowly, sort of sneaking up eventually to whatever gives me detonation.

We bought a 408 FE short block with Eagle internals for something between $3.5K and $4K from Horsepower Engineering. My son did the rest of the assembly himself. AFR heads with some upgraded valves were about $2.2K - I'd recommend getting them polished and smoothed though - they had more "ripple" from the CNC finish than I liked. Everything else including shaft mounted rockers and a big cam and lifters including headers ran about another $3k.

I would go H/C and shoot for 500hp. that is more than enough for the street, but if you are going racing I would use a turbo.

all depends on what extent of upgrades you want, but i think my base was like 5-7k or so.

I can remember off the top of my head.

Build NA. 500 rwhp is a lot of power. You can always add a 100 shot once you have the suspension and tires to hook it up. Building a nitrous motor doesn't make sense unless you are certain the rest of car is going to be set-up to handle over 600 rwhp.

I would go with the low compression option and a D1SC plus other goodies.

I remeber that car there. He also did my motor. Allen really knows his ****. My car is a stock bottom end TFS heads, Futral custom cam, all supporting mods for H/C/I, Built 4L60E with a PTC4400rpm stall, Strange 12 bolt with 4.11 gears. The car has ran a best of 11.30@120mph with a 1.5460ft. and she has some left in her. It's right on par on where Allen said it would do..

Lots of good options posted.

I am a fan of NA.

My choice:
LS2 402
AFR 205s milled to 60.5
Still working on cam possibilities:
224/230 609/604 110+2 XFI
224/228 581/588 110+2 XFI / XER
or ??
Daily Dry sump system
Fast92/92

Compression hopefully in the 12:1 range or more?
run 100 octane or E85 Race fuel ( not the pump crap )

Erik at HKE built my 408 in the sig below. Only 11.3 compression, but still managed to get 524 rwhp on a conservative dynoand a 9" rear.

I went with a 408 and thought it would also be two years before I got a boost application. Now in under a year just keeping my ear out I have a D1SC and a 408 trust me it was worth the wait.

How do you like that 100mm MAF I have been looking at a few of them?

I went with the Lingenfelter 100mm, because the outside diameter was a few mm smaller than the others. Since TSP never made their 100 lid , I was able to use the Fast Toys lid that I modified. I seriously considered SD but my tuner Mike Norris discouraged me.
