Default do 98 cars have paper water pump gasket?

Hello yall i noticed that my water pump had the paper like carboard gaskets on them. It was a pain to scrape them off the block and the pump. I Talked with one of my freinds and he told me that there are sopose to be metal gaskets. I bought the car used awhile ago and wondering if the person before me changed the water pump because of the paper gasket. Thanks

Yes, the 98 cars had a paper gasket.

I swapped to the later aluminum gaskets on my '98. No leaks.

10-4 on the above responses. My 98 had paper water pump and timing cover gaskets if I recall correctly. Definite PITA to scrape off. Just replace w/the later model reusable gaskets and you'll be fine.

I have brand new metal water pump gaskets sittting at my house. I didn't need them because there were so new ones already on my car when I went to change the timing chain and water pump. I'll sell them to you if you need them.

I havent tooken off the crank pulley. Dam more paper gasket to scrap off LOL. It was a pain to scrape off the water pump gaskets. Now i know what to expect when take off the cover. I am still waiting for my flywheel locking tool. The only way i could get them off was with a razor. I used a razor and brake cleaner. I finaly went down and bought a gasket disolver spray I am not sure if i want to use that in the front cover area.
Thanks

The front cover doesn't have a metal gasket?

The timing cover will be the regular metal gasket. It's just the water pump that had the paper gasket.
