Default Dome vs Flat top..

I am debating about what combo to use for my next 2 engine builds. I can either heavily mill the heads / use flat tops or mill the heads .030 / use a dome piston. Any input from you serious engine guys?

Given your criteria, I'd go with domes.

Given any option, I'd look at heads with a smaller combustion chamber and use flat tops.

I need to set this new motor up with 12-12.5:1. I can go with a 8 - 10cc dome and a .030 mill with a thin gasket. If I did it all in the head it would be a .060+ mill?

dont mill the heads. get you some +7 or +15 cc pistons. I am against milling heads.

Goober,
Why do you say not to mill the heads?

Once you mill them, you obivously takin away material on the heads you can't put back. I would experiment with different gaskets, pistons etc. Just safer

IF you mill the heads you will compromise your PV clearance. If you take it out of the pistons and the if you need the exster point of CR then u can take it out of the heads. If you already took a .030 -.040 of the heads and you need more but your PV is to close you have screwed your self.

If I get dome pistons they are going to have reliefs for the valves. I guess I am more worried about flame speed and if a dome piston will hurt performance due to a slower flame speed.

Any time you add a peak to a combustion chamber you are going to add a hotspot. The Ideal condition would be a totally flat piston with a small combustion chamber; in real life conditions that is hard to do. I would compromise with the smallest cc chamber I could get then calculate what piston cc I would need to get the desired compression ratio.

True-but how are the low/midlift numbers going to be affected by milling the heads?

I'd talk with someone that has some experience with milling the AFR 205's.

What bore are you thinking?

My first choice would be to weld the chambers up, then Angle Milling. Domes would be my last choice.
