Default C5 with headers gains 42 rwhp with CheaTR cam.

More impressive gains for the Thunder Racing CheaTR cam. Latest dyno was on a 2004 C5 with A4 trans, stock torque converter and 2.73 gear. The car had only a few bolt-ons: FLP headers (old style) with cats, x-pipe, Vararam Air Intake, Corsa Catback. No ported throttle body and no underdrive pulley.

As delivered with these bolt-ons, the C5 made 318 rwhp at around 5800 rpm. By only adding the Thunder Racing CheaTR cam 215/230 .600/.578 117LSA (with springs, pushrods), the rwhp jumped to 360. Power peak was pretty constant from 6400-6600. That's around a 42 rwhp jump for a cam only. Really nice gains for such a mild mannered cam. Up until now, most of the CheaTR cams have been on cars with stock exhaust manifolds. Looks like they gain nicely when a car has headers too.

I have to apologize in advance about the dyno run. There was a pickup wire problem that kept Thunder from getting a clean torque run. I can tell you that peak torque increased from 325 to about 340 (which occured around 4800 rpm) but even cooler was that torque at 6000 rpm was about 40 lb ft better than stock.

Greet job and nice #s ,with ported throttle or BBK80 and the a Upulleys it should led for another 10-25 hp .I was thinking of that cam plus the fast 90/90 intake with all the bolts-on ,torque converters (ss3600 )and rear end 3:42, would it be any good ?

Those are the mods I plan doing on my car in a week (minus the torque converter). I hope to show the gains of a FAST 90/90 setup (when running stock exhaust manifolds and cats), then I'll add Kooks 1 3/4" headers with a catted y-pipe and see what kind of additional power gains we see. Stay tuned.

Isn't this going to ruin the sleeper effect? Or is there a way you are gonna keep a full exhaust car quiet?

Catted y-pipe, no leaky emissions fittings on the headers, and a super quiet SLP Dual Dual exhaust. That's how I plan on staying stealthy quiet.

You can run full headers, catted y-pipe, and an SLP 2OTL or similar catback. It'll keep the exhaust note pretty quiet except @ WOT.

Edit - Dammit Pat you beat me to it. Talking to co-workers kills my response time lol.

The 318rwhp dyno was with a tune and the 360rwhp dyno was with a tune. So yes, it was tuned, but the results pretty much demonstrate the gains cam-only.

that before test seems kinda low for an A4 c5 w/ a cold air setup and headers IMO. Did he have high flow cats and x pipe too??

What are all his mods?

Mods were pretty mild. As listed in post #1. The car is a 2004 C5 with A4 trans, stock torque converter and 2.73 gear. The car had only a few bolt-ons: FLP headers (old style) with cats, x-pipe, Vararam Air Intake, Corsa Catback. No ported throttle body and no underdrive pulley.

While 318 might seem low, it's pretty typical of what Thunder Racing finds with C5s with automatics. More impressive is the amount of gain from the cam only. 42 rwhp with supreme driveability is a solid gain no matter how you slice it.

Patrick,

Nice results. Seems like the 'Old Man' cam took some Centrum... How does this cam stack up against the TR224? With the mods in my sig which cam would give better performance?

Thanks

Patrick, posting the valve events wont tell me much, but are they pretty much optimal for a stock cid LS1 much like the TRak cam you were mentioning? I'm not a subscriber to the bigger is always better cam philosophy. My little T1 is a nice little cam, but if I could pick up 10-20 more RWHP and a few more tenths at the track it would be something that I would highly consider. With gains this impressive it makes me wonder, although I would like a decently healthy lope, so the CheaTR cam migth not be for me (maybe I just need to get with you and Thunder and see what you guys think would be a good cam for my combo).

I've heard that this cam hasnt picked up much with headers...Didnt Geoff dyno his car and find this out,It seems the big split accompanied by the high LSA makes fore minimal gains when running any type of header with a cam like this Pat?42RW is impressive in its own right but it would be nice to see before/after header installs with this cam too..

Vortech just tested shorties with his AFR/LS6 cam setup and only got but was comparing them to Z06 manifolds so IMO u would think VS a standard LS1 manifold the shorty was worth closer to 10....

Maybe I'm wrong and the LT is worth power with cams more designed towards manifolds...
