I want a cam thats going to give me the most power and best sound with stock heads.
Im more in in for the sound <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> , but since Im breaking into the engine for the first time <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> , I might as well do it right by getting the cam thats going to give me the most gain. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> Down the road I dont want to be telling myself that wish I would have gotten a better cam. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> I want it to have a mean lope and the most power gain. Im dont have much knowledge about cams <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> , so youll have to be very specific when recommending a cam. Look at my mods and determine which one is right for me. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> Thanks and any help is much appreciated. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Ok ill bite..
Take a look at these installed setups:
http://ls1info.com/camstats/showdata.php
That may help narrow your search.
I installed a cam at 4200 miles on my 2001 ta.
I went with the hotcam kit because I wanted every
thing in one box. I got gaskets, crankbolt, hotcam
kit ( cam , retainers, springs ) from pace parts.
The install is pretty easy, do down to walmart and
get yourself 16 pen magnets..
use them like this.. ( keeps lifters from dropping )
http://ls1info.com/article.php?sid=185
When doing the spring replacement you will meet
the root of all evil..
http://ls1info.com/article.php?sid=157
This is how I did my install
http://ls1info.com/article.php?sid=49
with hotcam+lid+catback 330/330
added slp headers kit 351/364

Go with the C2 cam and valvetrain upgrade from MTI
C2 specs are 224/224/.581/.581/112
<a href="http://www.motorsporttech.com/2002_website/FBengine.html" target="_blank">MTI Cam and Valvetrain page. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> </a>

Damn you UBB! My post has been lost <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> . I'll reply again later, but for now I'm off to class.

I'm also going with the 224/224 .581/.581 but 114lsa so that it'll still have a nice idle and hopefully make close to 400rwhp on stock heads.

Speedtek's F1 230/227 .591/.569 112
sounds awsome and puts out some trick hp. Over 400 is almost guaranteed with stock heads and a few bolt-on's.

To Bluestreak: Ive never done a cam in an LS1 before...is there any way that you can give me steps on how to do a cam swap. Can you be real specific and tell me what I need to be careful of and what to watch out for. Now that you said that you had problems with lifters not staying in their retainer clips, you kinda scare me...makes me not want to do it anymore. Ok and about the magnets...when do I put them in...and when do I take them out? Thanks alot and any help is appreciated.

I have the MTI C1 cam in my car with stock heads. As Toxic says the C2 is a nice cam, probably a slightly rougher lope than my C1. But my car does great 35 miles one way everyday. You can see my mods in my sig. But as far as sound goes its definitely got a little of that old school cam sound.

To TA_2001: I thought that once you spun the cam over a few times that the lifters will sit in their holders and wont fall. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> If so, why would you need the magnet trick?
To ToxicTexan: What all is included in the valvetrain upgrade? Would you recommend doing lifters? Is that too much lift for me? Isnt that going to put alot of stress and take away the life of the valvetrain? How long do you think I can run that cam before having to replace the vavletrain that went in with the cam? What kind of hp/tq am I looking at with that cam? Do you think I should go with a cam with the same specs, but with a smaller lift? Is the C2 cam gonna have a mean lope to it? I found the same cam with identicle specs at LS1 Speed Inc for $70 cheaper! Is there any difference?
To Billy Bad WS7: That cam seems awful big...I dont think that I can run that cam with stock heads. Thats more lift and duration than any of the other cams that Ive been looking at. .581 is pushing it, more so with a .591! Thanks

The magnets will cost you about $2 each, but it's a smart idea. For $32, I'd rather do that than risk having to pull the heads... buy new head bolts... buy new head gaskets... etc... in the event you lose a lifter.
I've done a dozen cam swaps and have used the magnets every time. One more than one car, I've had problems with a couple of the lifters that would not remain in the retainer clips. I use drinking straws in the pushrod seats to verify that the lifters are up out of the way. The retainer cups are made of plastic, I doubt that they retain their shape perfectly after being heated and cooled inside the motor.
I've heard of many, many people doing cams without the benefit of the magnets, but they're just a good idea and a very small investment when you consider that removing and replacing the heads will cost you considerable extra install time plus about another $100 in parts to pull and replace the heads.

I see you learned alot from our talk. I like the magnet idea too!
If you upgrade the lifters they will work for a long time, the springs will lose their spring pressure over time and will do it at a faster rate with a higher lift cam.
Other than that, good post.

Re: I want a cam thats going to give me the most power and best sound with stock heads.
I would recommend both the Thunder Racing 224/224 561/561 cam or the Futral Motorsport 226/226 cam. I am not sure of the lift on the Futral. I think it is 581. Both of these will require computer tuning to get the most benefit.
I have the Thunder 224 on a 114 lobe sep. and it rocks.
Good luck with your choice.
