Default New Cam In A4/runs Like Sh#t?

just got the cam in the cam, a partiot 226/226 585/585 112 installed, along with the VIG 3800 converter. i put the converter in first, took it out for a test drive, felt very strong. Then i installed the cam/springs/lifters, and now it runs like dog ****. it will idle at 700-800, feels alright at cruising rpms(2000-2400), but after that it breaks up, starts hesitating, ect. its running rich, and popping a lot out of the exhaust. Just wanted to know if this is normal. the car is running on a stock tune, with full bolt ons, cam, and converter. I will be tuning on tuesday, my tuner said to just double check plug wires, ect. thanks for the input, tom

sounds like you are in bad need of a tune. You wont get the full potenial from the cam till you get tuned

And what did you expect from a stock tune and a new cam?

I would take your tuner's suggestion and check the plug wires. But my guess is you just need to get it tuned.

ALWAYS triple check your plug wires after messing with them. The wire should snap once onto the plugs and TWICE onto the coil packs. If you aren't sure you heard/felt it snap twice, take it off and do it again till you know it clicked twice.

I see a lot of threads where people's cars are not running well or making the power they should after a cam swap and UNTUNED. Get it tuned!

Check the plug wires and other connections. That cam isn't THAT big, it should run OK on a stock tune.

That is the truth alright, but the tuner can log misfires on each cylinder if you can't make it any better, but that is a good-sized cam to be running untuned, so you can't expect too much.

Default Same Cam In Mine.

98 A4 Same cam. I had to bump idle up some haven't gotten it tuned. But runs great with stock tune, can only imagine how well it run after tuned. Recently had the converter and trans done. Seems to handle the cam a little better. I would double check everything. Good Luck, you will like that cam.

My 220/220 cam got by without a tune and it felt pretty strong, except that it was on a 112 LSA and it surged at cold idle a lot. I thought it was livable until I got the car tuned ... would never do a cam swap without a tune .... even with a small cam. Combine that with intake upogardes and exhaust upgrades and you lose bigtime horsepower just from running so rich.

WELL, the culprit was in fact, a loose plug wire. double checked them all today, fixed the problem, and now MUCH better. I always like it when i go back and double check myself and find out that its something simple that i missed. thanks for all the input.
Anyways, it will idle at around 750-800 no problem, the converter locks up on the highway great, and feels strong when you flash stall the converter. the tune for the bolt ons/cam and T managment and other trans issues will bring it up to speed. Feels great on the punch even with stock tune, but the tuning is critical for optimal results. Well, off to the dyno on tuesday. ill drop the numbers on this thread if its still going by then.

I was about to say that the car shouldnt break up and run that bad without a tune.. mine with a 224 ran friggin fine for like 2 years without a tune lol.. 11.50@117 cam only and stock tune lol

glad you found that it was a loose wire

you should be good to go now
