Man seriously do a search. There are so many what's the best ls1 cam threads out there. First and foremost, there is no BEST OVERALL CAM cam's are specific to your goals. You can have a big power house and crappy driveability or you can have in between or whatever. I'd suggest you search and see what you want. Most popular cams are tr224 (thunder racing) Futral Motorsports f-13, f-14 (I like these cams), G5X3, just find something you want. Come with a more specific question once you narrow it down.

This will help you tremendously. That is why it is a sticky. Read them all.

I'd get the F-13 then if I were you. It is a great daily driver all around cam that will make a pretty good amount of power. Cam only with the usual bolt-ons (headers, intake, exhaust, etc.) you should be around 385-400rwhp.

SEARCH!
These posts are seriously rediculous.

Your best bet is to SEARCH and read the cam guide sticky at the top of this forum.

Make sure you have full exhaust (headers), then grab something like a TR224, F13, G5X2, TSP 233/239, etc etc.

When you say you don't want a "huge cam", are you looking at the lifts, durations, overlap...? If you are looking at lifts, why do you care if it has high lift?

Well, the problem is that what you are looking for is open to interpretation. We could easily recommend anything from a hotcam or LS6 to a G5X3.

Again, why are you setting lift requirements? When it comes to drivabilty you won't notice different lifts at all. IMO setting a somewhat arbitrary lift limit won't help you much.

So you are looking for a max power, out of a daily driver cam that doesn't have more than .585 lift? I'll get back to you on that in a few mins here...most cams of any decent size have more lift than that.

Edit: Most of the popular cams that make good power have more than .585 lift, so that will limit your choices a good bit. No F13, no G5X2 or X3, no 233/239....that leaves it at a 224. Can't really go wrong with a TR224, after all.

Alright what I think is its going to be inaccurate to estimate based on many variables, but at the same time not several options such that there are no tech solutions, okay.

For instance with stock gears and a six speed, and assuming its not a daily driver but rather a bracket racer, a F13 may indeed be right for you. OTOH, if it is a daily driver and you do lots of roll-ons in mid gear, something like a TR224 (or even the milder TR220) would be a safer bet, maybe even a wiser choice. See what I mean?

What are some of your planned mods and can you tell us what the car is used for, that might give us a better idea of the overall package. In addition if you can describe what characteristics you would like to see in a cam that would help to isolate the options. That way we can see that combining the information in the cam guide, and inter weaving the data from the goals you're after, estimations can be made about the size.

Okay, listen to me: Ignore the lifts. Don't even worry about them. What you want to worry about is overlap as it is what determines idle quality. You can calculate overlap with this formula:

[(intake duration + exhaust duration) /4] - LSA, and finally multiplied by two. Most common measurements and what you see on here are at .05" lift. A TR224 on a 112 lsa has 0* at .05 and smaller cams have negative overlap (negative meaning how far from having overlap it is). On the other end of the spectrum a T-rex has nearly 25* at .05. My MS3 has 13.5*. I think you would be best served with an overlap in the area of 10* or less, give or take.
There are other things that affect idle quality, but overlap is the most siginifcant. If you can get the duration numbers at other intervals it can tell you even more. Remember that the key to good street manners with larger cams is a GOOD TUNE.

Seriously consider an F13, G5X2 or similer. Do a lot of searches (seriously, search can REALLY help you) and also see if there is somebody in your area (or multiples) with cams that you can listen to and observe idle quality/drivability first hand..

blkZ28spt and 98t56ta already mentioned some good cams. Why don't you start some research by searching under the ones they mentioned? There is plenty of info on them.
