Default Engine Builders - Hone the Block after 6 hours

Do I need to hone the cylinders or put new rings in after 6 hours? I am pulling out my motor to tighten up the main bearings. I have about 5 or 6 hours on it since it was built. Most of that has been runs through the country with the scanner on, and one race weekend at the track. I was planning to just re-use the pistons and rings as is, but I just pulled off the throttal body and noticed a lot of oil in the intake from the PCV system. Is that normal, do I have excess blow by? I have not noticed any smoke or oil consumption. Maybe I will do a leak down test. If it is good, can I re-use the rings without a hone job?

The only way you can re-use the rings is if you don't hone it Just keep them in the same holes...

No sweat, pull the piston and put it back. I'm going to check the leak down on Sunday AM. I will post what I find.

4% - 6% leak down. 4 on some as much as 6 on others. Wow, that does not really sound good, my LS1 that I am selling with 18K had 2%. I'm calling my motor builder tomorrow to see if we need new rings. Maybe these didn't seat properly, what's up with that? Will they get better with time???

well depending on your school of thought, 5 hours really isn't a lot of time to give new rings to seat properly. give it a few hundred miles then check it

Racecar, your leakdown is fine, I'd re-use them if it we're me.

My motor guy said to try to determine if the leak is coming from the cylinder, or the valves. I'm going to pressure it again when I get the intake off and listen to the intake and exhaust ports. If the valve grind is leaking, I will re-grind the valves. Sounds like you guys are OK with the rings. This test was with a cold motor, the ring gap would probably decrease and seal up better if it was warmed up.
