Finally ordered my 408 Shortblock
well as some of you know i blew my motor about 2 months ago. i broke a valve spring, sucked a valve and threw a rod through my block. sucked pretty bad as my warranty was just barely up.
ordered my 408 fully forged stroker motor from HPE (horsepower engineering) yesterday and it shouldnt take incredibly long.
setup will include the following.
HPE forged 408 Shortblock
ARE stage 3 fully ported heads (flowed like 348)
HPE's new cam (forgot the name)
FAST port matched intake manifold.
1.7 jesel roller rockers
11:1 compression
full length long tubes w/Xpipe
B&B tri flow exhaust
Vararam intake
Spec stage 3 clutch
New rebuilt transmission W/Hardened shafts
oh yeah..
and a 200 shot of nitrous, wet of coarse
wish me luck!! i hope to get some good times and some good numbers!

800 to the wheels is my goal on spray. ( i think its a pretty feasable goal?) if i dont get there with a 200 shot i can always up the nitrous to the next jet size till i put down 800. at least thats the way i see it

ARE stage III heads????
As in Agostino Racing Engines in Canook land?
Unless you allready have those and are satisfied with their performance, I would not even come close to any of their products even if you got them for free.

why do you say that?? they have had some problems with the company...but flow numbers of 348 is better than the AFR 225's ? i could care less what kind of corporate problems they are having as long as my heads flow well.

Go read the customer feedback of the horrors ARE are still doing to customers.
What you are saying is not logical.

ok i guess i should probably clarify.. the heads are used and are currently on a 422 agostino camaro here in utah. they guy is building a blower motor and is going to sell me the heads and the intake manifold for 2500 dollars fully assembled. this is why im considering them. if i buy them i will tell him i want them flowed locally to be sure they are what he claims they are, if they flow good and have been running good on his car then are there any other things i should look out for?

im buying the big bore cam from HPE, (havent purchased yet) im not sure on the specs, supposedly they put down VERY good power and there is no need for flycutting and it idles just like stock.
:edit: btw the cam is not yet on their site.. if you call them they will sell ya one but it has not been added to the site for sale yet.

You also mentionned 800rwhp on a 200 shot N2O. So you motor NA should make 600+rwhp NA, kinda hard to do with stock idling cam don't you think?
Man, I'm not trying to discredit you but I think you need to research all the parts you're putting together for your combo, from full specs of shorblock>cam>heads>boltons etc... if you do not want to be seriously dissapointed with the figures you have in mind.

I would never pay 2500 for a set of those heads new much less used. I must say that you are building a nice motor and i wish you the best of luck. But you are starting out on the wrong foot by going used. 2500, plus new springs, plus a look over by someone exerienced at a reputable shop equals way more than a new (and better) head.
I really don't mean to come down on ya bud. I see guys in here all the time floating on cloud nine because they finally reach a goal, (and i congratulate you on this) but PLEASE take some advice and look else where for some heads. JMHO. I rarely post in here, but i have read tons and tons over the years. If nothing else, chew on it for awhile and then go with your gut instinct.
Best of luck, WOT

yeah the intake is the only reason its so much, its a port matched FAST 90MM intake manifold. they are 800 dollars by themselves without the port work.
as for the comment on the stock idling cam and the valve reliefs.
no valve reliefs needed with the cam according to them. also withh good ead flow and the 408 they seem to think that i will have NO problem hitting that much RWHP on the setup, their setup hit MORE than that, at least thats what the guy named kevin said when i called him. i called them yesterday and found out the kevin no longer works there though. so now im going through a new guy named elie or something??

ok i just got some clarifying... hehe
the cam is a 244/248 , 612/615 on a 115 LSA
pistons are already notched
guy in the shop installed the cam in his last week, put down 479 in an automatic with some decent heads.
he assured me that 515-530 should be easily attainable naturally aspirated through a 6 speed with the same or little better heads.
add a 200 TNT shot on that and id imagine id be right around 740-750 RWHP, with a 250 TNT shot i should be very close to my 800 RWHP goal.
correct???
opinions???

I'm just trying to help you with sound advice.
Post another thread with a title like " How many 600 rwhp 408's around?" and ask them to describe their setups. You'll see what I'm trying to explain to you.
Anyways, it is your $$

Yeah I have a 408 with the "Big E" cam that we just installed last week in my 02 automatic firehawk with a vigalante 4200 stall. It made 479rwhp. Thats with our stage 3 5.3 heads. The car feels awesome!!! You will be satisfied!!!!
