Default Head/Cam Swap 99% Done Deal

The little woman gave me the green light to spend the money on the parts.

Then the car gods smiled upon me. I went to a local speed shop, and talked to the engine builder who built an insane 535 RWHP '85 Monte for my barber. I was asking him questions about the job, when he asked me how I planned to drop the engine/tranny out of my car. I told him I had a shop with a 2-post lift, so it shouldn't be a problem. When he heard that, he asked me how big my shop was. I told him it was 24'X30'X16'. He told me that if I let him store his '03 Z06 'Vette in the other 1/2 of my shop for the winter, he'd help me drop the engine/tranny, and install the heads, cam, clutch, and do the valvetrain upgrades. Booyah!

BTW, this is what I've decided to go with:

AFR 205cc 66cc Mongoose heads with Comp 921 dual valve spring upgrade
Comp OEM replacement hydraulic roller lifters
Jesel shaft mounted roller rockers
Comp chromemoly hardened pushrods
ARP fasteners (studs)
GM OEM gaskets
Comp G5-X2 232/240 .595/.608 cam
SLP timing chain & HD oil pump

I still have to figure out if I need to go with bigger injectors. I'm also toying with the idea of getting the FAST intake with 90 mm throttle body.

The only loose end hanging so far, is where to get the dyno tune done.

What do you guys think of the component selections?

pretty nice setup, get some injectors and a walbro. better safe than sorry on that.
a FAST/NW 90/90 would be badass too.

I'm still running stock injectors but I'm borderline needing 30's.

Go for the G5X3, you can't tell a difference in sound or drivability just more power mine has near stock driving mannors until I give it some stick.

I agree.. Pick up some 42# injectors and a Walbro 255 in-tank pump. And if you don't buy the Fast 90/90 to compliment your AFR heads then you are a fool!

1QuickT-A:

I'm assuming the Walbro is an in-tank, hi-flow fuel pump? If so, how difficult is it to drop the tank and install the new pump? Will I need a pressure regulator, too?

I have heard that you can over-do it by going to big with injectors. Would 36# be okay, or is 42# what I really need for my set-up?

I do REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get the FAST 90/90 set-up, but I did not consider the intake when drawing uo my budget. I'm sure you know how much those cost. I'll try to sneak it by the little woman. Thank you for the advice/input.

RPO_Z06 & Brandon....thanks for the advice/input, also

I'd also like to know if a fuel pressure regulator is needed. I don't think it is unless you switch out your rails to ones with higher volume.

Fueling for my AFR 205 heads, Comp cam, & intake were done with 30# injectors, 255 Walbro, & no fuel pressure regulator (stock returnless rails were used). Speak wit your tuner about injector size specific to your set up.
Would think it to be in the 30# to 36# range. Engine is a 99 LS1 (Camaro SS).

I agree, get 30lb injectors and forget GM oem gaskets..get cometic MLS head gaskets.

also, mill the heads to 59 for some free horsepower. but make sure you confirm you wont need to flycut the pistons before firing it up.

"Just make sure your block can take it."

Why would there be a problem with the block? It's an '02 with 23k on the clock. I thought the only thing I really had to worry about was not replacing the stock rod bolts. Not trying to sound like a wise-a$$, but I truly don't understand the risk(s) to the block.

"if your not goin with a solid setup go with some crane rockers instead.."

I have heard nothing but good things about Crane products. On the other hand, I've heard nothing but good about the Jesel shaft mounted rockers, too. From the tech literature I've read, Jesels provide a high degree of valvetrain stability, and free up HP, too. Are there advantages to the Cranes over the Jesels?
