Default Help me build my 400RWHP dream!

Let me get straight to the point, I am building up my car this spring, and my budget is $3500. I have an A4 with a Midwest 3000/2.1 stall convertor, Hooker LTs and an all custom Loudmouth exhaust.

Heres what I will get for the car:

LS6 intake,
Absolute Speed 1x heads (CR 10.7:1 with a 208cc intake chamber)
ASP Pulley
Wideband Dynotune

Plus I will be replacing all the usual stuff, lifters, pushrods, springs, oil pump, etc...

Since I plan on getting custom tuning, I plan on raising the idle to take care of A4 idling problems, and I WANT a noticable lope to the idle.

What Im undecided on is the cam. I have considered the T1 cam, the TR220 112LSA, TR224 112LSA, and other mild cams, but I wanted to know if theres something better I should go with that would be optimized for my setup.

One last requirement, is this car must pass emissions. In IL, all I need to pass is my OBD2 system must not report any problems, so I guess it really doesnt matter what the cam is, or does it?

Sorry for the long post, but there has to be some type of split duration or custom grind out there you guys could recommend...I am willing to get a custom grind made if it would be any better than some of the premade ones out there.

Thanks in advance.

If allyou have to pass is the OBDII, you're tuner can take care of that. I think you're on the right track with the TR224.

Might want to try the LG Motorsports G5 cam. Seems to work well for others.

Anyone else have any feedback?

Speed Inc will do any custom grind that I want, so I am open to a custom setting... I know the TR224 cam is supposed to be a great cam, but alot of people are having luck with reverse split cams now, and I wanted to know if anyone had any feedback about those.

Lastly, whats the difference between an XE and an XE-R grind?

Thanks in advance...

You can also look at fastechs F1 cam, I think the specs are: 230/226 .591/.569 112 w/110 centerline (+2 degrees)

I have the G5 cam (the F1 wasn't out yet). I enjoy the cam very much and it makes good power with stock heads and stock cat back (as well as stock MAF and stock Throttle Body). I had LG do the custom tune on it, but I think I will take it somewhere and get it dyno tuned. I use this car as my daily driver and so far I am very happy. I need to get to the track in good cold weather

Couple of points, & answers to your questions.

First, the Absolute Stage 1x heads have 208 cc ports, not combustion chambers. They are usually milled .030".

Second, most of the cams you are considering will not pass emissions testing w/ a sniffer. About the max duration you can run & still pass emissions is a 220/220. If IL only requires that you pass OBDII, w/ no SES lights, you can use LS1 Edit to turn off the SES light & reset the codes.

Since you already have LT headers, you can't pass emissions testing (a sniffer test) anyway....

The difference between the Comp Cams XE grind and their XE-R grind is the ramp rate (how quickly the valve opens & closes). Most of the XE-R grinds are at .580" or more lift. Your Stage 1x heads only gain 7 CFM from .550" to .600" lift. However, the faster ramp rate will get the valve open more quickly.

Hope this helps...

Usually if a cam has a longer duration on either the intake or exhaust side, the lift is bigger on that same side...the specs you posted make it opposite. If that is correct, is there a reason for it?

I've been reading alot about the reverse split cams and people say that since the LS1 doesnt have the best flowing intake design in the world, having a reverse split cam can help compensate for it. I will be going with an LS6 intake, will that balance it out more?

One more requirement I should have said is I want a balanced street machine, not a 7000 RPM strip car that needs to be revved high to get power. I dont want something with a superhigh redline, 6600 RPM was what I was looking for...does that limit me too much?

Your recommendation on the XE-R makes it sound like its not necessary unless I'm going with a big lift cam...so if I went with something like MTIs T1 cam which has a lift of about .560, I wouldnt need an XE-R grind, would I?

As for emissions, I have a custom Y with cats on it, so my car should pass emissions, but I was thinking, I have 2 years til my next test, and when they tested me this last time, they didnt even put me on the sniffer, and IL doesnt do visual tests, so I'm probably free to go with any cam I choose.

Thanks for all the info. I feel I know a decent amount about cams, but I'm still in the dark about whats best for me...

Keep the info coming...any other suggestions?

I know it is somewhere in the neighborhood.
Anyway .. if you look at my dynograph (sig), I get peak HP at about 6000rpms or so, I have my rev limiter set at 6700rpms .. it works out pretty good and pretty much pulls the whole way

Maybe someone else can get you the full specs on the cam or you could call LG and find out.

Thanks,

Thanks for all the advice guys. Through reading here and on other boards, I really think that I am going to go with Thunderracing's 227/224 reverse split cam. It seems like it will accomplish what I wamt. I will most definitely be getting my heads done. Right now, I am leaning towards the Absolute Speed Stage 1X heads.

I wish it was April already!

unless they are a proven head, I wouldn't waste my time.

Though it has stage 2 and not 1X the Absolute Speed heads have been proven on my car.TR 224/224 563/563 on a 112 LSA and the A.S stage 2's along with all the bolt ons got 405rwhp thru an unlocked A4 with the Yank 4400.FLP headers with removable cats and it passed emissions here in N.Y.The port volume remains low while the flow numbers do not suffer and this made good power. You will be happy with the TR224 and those heads from the description of what are looking for in the first post.

I'm pretty sure that Absolute speed heads are worth the money. I personaly love the Katech heads. Katech makes the C5 racing engines... I think that proves them as well.

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who responded to this thread. I think I have all the information I need to start buying parts. I will have everything I need once I get my tax return, so this project will commence in late April - May of this year, and my car will be reborn! I will post my experiences and some pix when I have them.
