Default Loud Ticking When Start And Run

My mods are in the sig and just have not had any problems until reacently, did the cam and valve tran swap a month ago. Just yester day when I started my car in the morning its was perfectly normal, started to drive it to work and just got out the drive way there is a terrifying LOUD TICKING noise from the driver side. It sounded like the valves are hitting something or something is loose, but this has never happened before. The noise only lasted about 30 seconds and then it was gone. No SES lights, the car runs just fine, I took off the valve cover and everything seams to be in working order, and no pieces of metal anywhere, I got on it couple of times and free reved to about 5000 rpm and still nothing. But this happens every time after I start the car and is always the same, only happens for few seconds and then goes away, but by the sound of the noise its just not normal at all. Does anybody have any idea what might be wrong here.

Sounds like the infamous piston slap. I know that I have to let my 02 warm up for about 5 minutes to get my piston slap to completely go away, and it will randomly come back while the engine is at operating temp.

I know what a piston slap sounds like and this is nowhere near close to it. This noise is way lounder than any piston slap I have ever heard from a LS1.

its probably piston slap, just not what your used to.piston slap on cold idle is different then on cold driving. When you pull out of the driveway even if your engine is up to temp you will have piston slap.it wont go away until you start driving which will bring piston temps up.when you start driving the piston will still be cool for about 15-30 seconds even if your engine has idled up to 200* the piston will not get up to its normal temp. Its just hard piston slap which will sound like a rod knock. After you drive for 30 seconds the piston will get hot and expand real fast and the "knock" will go away.

I understand where you guys are coming from, but the fact of the matter is my car has always had piston slaps and I know what it sounds like. But this noise is 5X louder than any piston slap noise I heard from my car before. I know is something else that is wrong but I don't know what.

if your sure its something else then drain the oil and look for metal.cut your filter open and see if you find anything.its the only thing i can think of to start with.

Sounds to me like you have a bad rod bearing. Crawl under the car while running and see if it is louder near the oil pan..

Me too. The ticking noise is only at the top of the motor near back on the driver side.

I've been hunting down a wierd ticking or fluttering sound for the past month myself. Seems to be simular to what your describing. I'd only get it when i first started the car after it sat for a while, then went away.

anyway, I bought 2 new check valves, and swapped them in.
I tested both, the pass seemed fine, but the drivers side seemed to not let the air blow through as easily as a new unit would. but it seemed to have helped.

Feeling Im on the right track, 2 nights ago, I went ahead and did the restrictor plate mod. Ya know, installing a block off plate with a 3/16" hole in the center.

Well, for the past 2 days and 2 nights, I have not heard that sound anymore.

I hope this was my problem all along, and its finally fixed for real!

btw, I do have SLP LT's.

so, check out your AIR system.

Are the stock lifters really that bad? So far all the guys that said or had the lifter problem all has much more aggressive cam than what I got. I was told with mine cam the stock lifter will be just fine by people on this very same site and I can't understand why and how the lifters went bad since I have not got on it or reved it up in the past 2 month because of the gas prices.

Also check the A/C clutch. Mine sounded like a very loose rocker arm clatter on cold startups and then went away. I lubed it up and let it sit over night and hadn't heard from it since. Pull your a/c belt for a quick test.
