Default Dart "as cast" test

Ran one of our 402 crate engines with a LS2 intake and 90mm throttlebody. It had dyno headers with bullet mufflers. BS3 control.
Testing corrected to SAE OE standard. (same as Z06 505hp engine)
Dart head is 2.05 valve
5.3 CNC head is 2.08 valve

Dart 225--------competitive priced 5.3 head
rpm--tq---hp-----tq---hp
3000-428-244--407-232
3500-412-275--399-266
4000-465-354--447-341
4500-487-417--472-404
5000-490-467--472-450
5500-473-496--459-480
6000-446-510--428-489
6100-440-511--422-490
6200-433-512--415-490
6300-425-510--408-489
6400-417-508--399-486

We will do some mild port changes to see how they respond.
Dart head as tested: $1,630.50 retail, ready to install.

Sweet. I bet you could get 530rwhp at least with a fast 90mm intake. Excellent for a $1630 head

All testing was done on a engine dyno. The numbers are rated at the flywheel. Sorry....

Was this done with a small cam? I am trying to decide on the 205 or the 225 heads for my stock shortblock f13 cammed car. Low end tq is not my main concern as I have 4.30 gears for that.

Hyd in the 24X @ .050 range. Have not tested the Dart on small camshaft.

I added a third set of dyno numbers for Edelbrock intake with Pro-systems carb.

Have not seen the TF or the Edelbrock head yet.
Our quest now is to find an affordable base head for our crate engine, so the price point has kept us testing ported GM castings until now. We will be testing another 5.3 CNC version and re-testing the Dart with mild portwork.

I'd be interested in this too. Will these heads work with stock cubes?

While they do stack up admirably against the 5.3's, the numbers of both heads seem low for an engine dyno. Like somebody already asked, was it a baby cam?

The engine dyno at Wheel to Wheel is a extremely conservative / SAE dyno. This is not a loose piece of equipment, it is stingy.

What does it matter if the dyno numbers are high or low? IMO, the important thing is their dyno can generate 'some' consistant numbers to compare one combo to another... regardless if it says the engine made 550 hp or 450 hp.

BTW, Kurt answered the cam question earlier in the thread.

Sorry, didnt mean to get everybody's panties in a bunch. I did say that it stacked up admirably, didnt I? Im just curious, what with all the people claiming 15-20% drivetrain losses, why an engine dyno would seem to be comparitively lower than estimates based on adding in drivetrain losses to chassis dyno numbers. The gain from one head to another is impressive. To a casual observer, 523 engine HP (445 RWHP @ 15% loss) dosnt jump out as a powerhouse of a 402. Knowing that they dyno is somewhat stingy is useful information here. Much like knowing that a mustang dyno is going to dyno a bit lower than a dynojet.

So that there is no doubt:

GOOD WORK KURT! IMPRESSIVE GAINS!

Id say thats a pritty big difference especially considering the darts are cast and the 5.3 heads are pnp stage 3.

Have you guys got a program to cnc the dart heads?

Wet1 - he has it listed as a 225 head. It is above the dyno #'s.

Has anyone compared Dart's flow numbers on their 225's with ETP's 11 deg. 215's ?

The as cast Dart's are not that far off (between 7 and 12 cfm lower across the board)

JMO but it seems that with just a little work, the Darts could get there.

That's if the numbers are accurate...
