Default ? power after a motor breaks in ?

I posted my dyno #'s for my 408 and i am wondering how much power people have gained after there motors fully break in? My motor at the time of dynoing had about 45 minute's of break in time and all of that was with no load on the motor. Thanks Shawn

I haven't had it dynoed, but mine "feels" a little faster after putting about 2000 miles on it. It could be just me, or the colder weather resuling in less traction. I tryed babying it as much as I could for the first 500 miles.

There is absolutly no problem in making dyno pulls on a fresh motor. With todays piston ring materials and cylinder wall finishes the rings seat very quickly.

Shawn whrere does your engine make peak power?

Well, like Predator -X said, so the rings set up correctly. Not to mention the C-5 I saw puke the motor doing a dyno run with 200 miles on it.

That wasn't because of the mileage. If it happened it would have happened anyways. The more you load the engine, the BETTER the rings will seat. The worst thing you can do for a fresh motor is let it idle too much or rape it while it's cold.

Thats an old school of thought. Todays rings do not need the time to "seat" in the bore because of much more exact tolerances along with better materials. The benefits of modern technology.

Bryan, I have not seen the graff yet but they told me they set the rev limiter at 6800 cause it was flat at that point, so i'm assuming around 6400-6600 which seems low to me with my cam. I am thinking about retarding the cam 2 degree's . Do you think i'll pick up any power with a few thousand miles on it??

I have heard the best way to break in a NEW motor is to throw it on the dyno and make some pulls. There was a link somewhere explaining how it is better.

I drove mine for 150 miles varying the speed from say 40-70 on the highway, 3rd-5th gear increments up to 5K. Then hammered on it. Car's running real strong and doesn't lose a drop of oil.

I would think you could get 10-20 RWHP after about 2,500 miles. If torque plates were in place when the block was bored/honed, I've heard you won't see much increase ... maybe 5-10.

Good to hear. I have 1500 on the motor and still running dino oil.

Thinking synthetic and more miles, I should hit 435.

Plus how would you tune it? You'd stand a better chance of washing a ring out if you didn't tune for the combination than you would blowing your motor because it was fresh on the dyno. I've always been told to warm it up and pound on it.

Yes when people come back and dyno later on down the road at our shop often they will pick up a little. We have had a few pick up 5 to 10 RWHP.

Like Bryan said the engines nowadays with a normal plateau hone job and moly rings and with the bearing clearances set there is nothing much to break in and you can hit the dyno right away.
