Anyone using a G5X3 cam?
How do you like it?
According to a local highly reputed tuner, there is no reason to use the g5x3 cam, he says it's too large. He tells me that he custom grinds cams all the time that make the same power and create a lot less stress on the valve train. He suggested a grind something like this: 224/228 duration w/ .590 lift.
Is he just trying to sell me a cam or is he right?
BTW Comp 921 spring kits are expensive!!! I've heard about PRC springs too, much less expensive, are they any good?

224/228 is definitely a good choice. It depends on how you are going to use the car. You will have more usable power under the curve with a 224. People that have used it have put down some great numbers as well, plus it's not so hard on the valve train depending on the cam profile you pick and the lift. 590 is a lot of lift, by the way. I'm not too concerned with torque, unless it's usable, it's no fun peddling through 1st and 2nd gears. My friend has an 03 Cobra w/ 515rwhp and until he upgraded to delrin bushings in the rear suspension, he couldn't put his foot into it until 3rd gear w/out HUGE amounts of wheel spin. I want to be able to put my foot into it and feel the power come on in a similar way to how the car reacts with the stock cam, just more up top.
I think the G5X3 is .600 and .610, duration not specified... It's on a 112 so that oughtta help out with the low end, compared to say a 114, huh?

C. Lobe Separation Angle (LSA)
- LSA is defined as spread in camshaft degrees between the intake centerline and the exhaust centerline.
- Overlap is the number of crankshaft degrees that both the intake and exhaust valves are open as the cylinder transitions through the end of the exhaust stroke and into the intake stroke
- LSA is ground into the cam and cannot be changed without grinding a new cam
- Bigger duration cams will have more overlap then a smaller duration cam even if both are on the same LSA.
- The key to making overlap work is maximizing the power in the rpm band where you want it.
- Long overlap periods work best for high-rpm power. For the street, a long overlap period combined with long-duration profiles combine to kill low-speed torque
- Reducing overlap on a long-duration cam will often increase midrange torque at the expense of peak power, but if the average torque improves, that’s probably a change worth making.
