Locking the Flywheel?
What is the best way to do this without the flywheel locking tool? I dropped the starter and wedged a screwdriver in, but no luck . Anything will help

the heads are already off and so are the lifters. The head bolts are clean and everything is ready for the TSP H/C swap. I just can't lock that damn flywheel to save my life.

I popped that round plug on the bottom of the bellhousing towards the driver side and used a crow bar in there. I did this 3 or 4 different times by myself so I know it worked for me fine. I wish I would of owned the tool anyway though..

Another idea for folks that have had this problem is make a holding tool yourself. Get a piece of 1" angle iron about .125" or so thick and drill a couple of slotted holes where the starter holes would be. Get some shorter bolts and lock it in this way. Basically same thing as a flywheel locking tool and you can pick a piece of iron up at Tractor supply for the tune of $10 or so.
