Default Head bolts or studs.

I am ready to order bolts or studs. Is it worth paying for studs or will arp bolts do just fine?

I just had this conversation with east side performance. they said if the heads aren't going to come off again, just go w/ the basic bolts.. thats what I'm going to do at least.

Either way you can't go wrong... but if you need to remove the heads for whatever reason, and go with bolts, just plan on replacing them. Personally, I went with studs.

You can re-use arp head bolts can't you? I thought I read that somewhere.

yeah you can. But you will have to clean out all the holes again whenever you take the heads off if you do the bolts.

You really should remove the studs too and reclean the holes, I know it seems a little overkill but I personally would do it, it's not that big a deal, nothing an airhose on an airgun can't make short work of.

You can reuse arp bolts yes, but I know the studs can be reused as many times as you want, the bolts, I don't know.

I have ARP head bolts. No problems what so ever. Just make sure you cleans the holes the best you can. Get everything out of them. The smallest obstruction will cause a miss-torque reading and may eventually result in a blown head gasket. Lube em up alot as well. Do these two things by the book, and you will be A-ok.

The bolts and studs come with a silicone grease, use that, there's about enough in the package to do the job once.

I vote for studs..... I have had my heads off 4 (soon to be 5) times, makes it a snap... This is on a C5 though... f-body and studs equal painfull install...

How about this idea: Remove your head bolts before swapping heads, then put in studs, then take off the heads? Wouldn't that avoid the necessity of cleaning all the coolant/oil/other crap from the bolt holes?

Haven't done it, just asking if that's a good idea.

I have tried it, when I was using factory bolts, some water still seeps into the bolt holes...

Bolt holes have to be cleaned no matter what.... dont' take a chance trying to get away with not doing it, it's not worth it.

The heads on my transam were installed with studs... not that big a deal to get the heads on, only problem was getting the tq wrench on the back bolt on the passengers side... teh heater box cover needed a little massage to let the tq wrench in there

Some where on this forum are some pictures of a block cracked by TQing a head bolt down and water (which does not compress) busting the block....

I went with studs as well. I had no problem getting the heads in there. And no worries about snapping bolts or stripping threads.

Well I bought bolts instead of studs. I hope they work just as well. I got a great deal on them with a gasket kit.
