Default Oil consumption problem??

When I bought my 01 SS the previous owner said he just changed the oil in the car and used Amsoil 5W-30. So when I took the car I wanted to check the oil levels, etc. I noticed it was a quart low. I filled it up and didn't have an issue. I just did an oil change a few weeks ago and used Royal Purple 5W-30. I decided to check the level and it was again one quart low so I filled it up again. My question is can it just be the weight I am using that causes a little more consumption or can something actually be wrong. The motor only has 23k on it and I have driven only a couple months since my oil change. The car is my daily driver. It never goes any lower than a quart low either.

Hi RPM
The problem could the PVC valve - the LS1/6 have been know to suck oil, do a search on OIL CATCH CAN and you will see what other people have found. What you are not telling us is how many miles does it take to lose a quart of oil, they would help greatly.
Thanks
Bill

I did do a search for that and it seems that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I have read that a breather does the trick. If i were to guess the mileage it would probably be around 1500.

If your losing 1 qt in 1500 miles then that is not too awful bad. My last LS1 car used about a quart every 1k. Now my current car I don't even have to add oil between changes, it hardly moves, but it does move slightly, I don't drive it easy either. I bet if I just drove it normally like I do my truck it wouldn't burn a drop. Fact is, GM actually claims that what I would normally have called excessive oil consumption, to be "normal". Don't worry about it too much, your not alone.

I do have a catch can on my car. It's not gonna stop how much oil you burn, but will keep your intake tract clean and reduce carbon deposits inside the combustion chamber....I recommend the AMW, pricey, but it's top notch quality.

Where do you buy a catch can and how do you take care of it? I have been out of the loop for almost 5 years now.

Accurate machine works is a sponsor on here. Go to their website and pick what color you like best. I mounted mine in front of the battery, looks great and tucks in there nice.

To take care of it all you have to do is remove it and dispose of the sludge by opening the valve at the bottom of the can. Every now and then you can take the steel wool out via removing a snap ring and a screen and clean it all with soap and water, degreaser, rubbing alcohol, brake cleaner, or whatever suits you. It's very simple.

You'll be surprised how much junk was going through your engine and wished you had one sooner.

Not to be a jackass, but you can built a comparable setup for $20 from parts from the air compressor aisle in Sears. The factory option DOES look better though.

You can get catch cans off E bay cheap too.

I just got the dreaded low oil level message last night. I had been driving hard, and its got 3800 + miles, 1200 were all highway from the Texas to Michigan drive and my remaining oil life % reads 31% I was a little more then a qt low. I do have a built in oil cooler and run 8 qts. Hopefully its not plugged or blocked somehow. No oil drips, no smoke, nothing, but I am down over a qt and just added nearly a qt 3 wks ago. I think I am going back to my old strategy, change at 50% regardless of mileage. Sorry if I hijacked your thread.

Bah, all performance motors use oil and if they dont then they dont last as long. THat is old-school advice from my tech and I think he has a point in most cases.
