Default Damage to engine (pics)

Well, my hunch was right that a valve dropped
Here's the damage.

This is what I saw when I pulled the intake:

A little deeper:

What I first saw when I pulled the head:

Head:

Lifter on left collapsed:

So, any guesses what the cause was?
Head break? Lifter collapse? Valve springs, and rockers were fine.

Thanks

OUCH! What kinda of setup did you have? What was the headgasket thickness? Valve size? Were the heads milled? What are the specs of the cam you were using?

What was your piston to valve clearance?

Looks like you over reved it or weak valve springs and caused the valves to float.

I suspect you did not have adequate P/V clearance upon assembly. If you look at the next cylinder in the pic you can also see evidence of P/V contact as well. The eye lash from the healthy cylinder corresponds to another on the destroyed cylinder.

That's what I was thinking too. I'd really like to know all the specs of the build so we can confirm that.

He was running 2.02 valves with unmilled heads and a torquer 2.

I told you it was a dropped that valve that killed it.

I bet your lifter crapped out and that lead to a chain reaction.

You weren't revving the hell out of it when the spring broke.

What in the lifter craps out? Just curious...

I just read in his other thread that the heads were milled .008" and he has Torquer V.2 cam. With a 232/234 cam and bigger valves, thinner gasket??, I think PTV clearance was an issue. I'm not sure what kinda valves he had, but my ferrea valves gave up a lot of clearance because of the margin (the lip that's after the point of contact that hangs down into the combustion chamber). The margin on mine measured .060 compared to stock which is .020. Maybe his were similiar?

I hate seeing pics like these, especially when I'm doing a headswap

I would bet the lifter was damaged after the piston contact with the valve....

if you look closely you can see the same mark at the same place on the destroyed piston

You guys caught my setup from the other thread
I was running the stock GM headgaskets. The cam/gaskets were recommended by Texas-Speed since I had the slightly milled heads and bigger Ferrea valves. I was going to run the Magic Stick and they said there's no way it would work. That's why I went with the Torquer. Valvesprings were Patriot Golds with titanium retainers etc.
BTW, I put the stock lifters back in (they had about 60k on them).

The "tick" that it had was there from initial start-up. At first people thought it may be the wrong PR length. I called Texas-Speed and they said there's no way that's the problem (I was running the hardened 7.400" from them). We deceided that it was the stock lifters. The worst part about this whole deal was that Tuesday morning I was going to order new COMP lifters and was going to pull the heads next weekend to replace the suspected shitty lifters.

Looking back on it now I wish I would've just got the new lifters when I ordered everything else
