Finally started 408 assembly, LOL, first issue!
So...I sold my stock shortblock with the windage tray attached to it and never even bothered to look at it. So I purchased GM P/N 12558253. First I noticed that 3 of the holes on the new tray are oval shaped and need to be drilled out....not a big deal...then I get under the new shortblock and notice that the tray only has 8 holes and does not cover the entire length of the engine . So..I pull out the GM manuals and look at the install picture and it has ten holes! Did they send me the wrong one? or is it only supposed to have 8 holes? If only 8, is it shifted toward the back one row or the front one row?
2nd problem....its about 20F outside and I just tried to put the crankshaft key(70F) in the slot the slot and it got jammed

The F-body windage tray does not cover the entire length of the motor. It is biased towards the rear, leaving the #1 main cap exposed. Use the supplied ARP washers to space the tray upwards and check rod/counterweight clearance afterwards.
Also, it is always a good idea to check oil pump pickup to pan clearance, especially since you are moving the pickup closer to the bottom of the pan when spacing the tray upwards. Shoot for 1/4" clearance.
