Default Finally started 408 assembly, LOL, first issue!

So...I sold my stock shortblock with the windage tray attached to it and never even bothered to look at it. So I purchased GM P/N 12558253. First I noticed that 3 of the holes on the new tray are oval shaped and need to be drilled out....not a big deal...then I get under the new shortblock and notice that the tray only has 8 holes and does not cover the entire length of the engine . So..I pull out the GM manuals and look at the install picture and it has ten holes! Did they send me the wrong one? or is it only supposed to have 8 holes? If only 8, is it shifted toward the back one row or the front one row?

2nd problem....its about 20F outside and I just tried to put the crankshaft key(70F) in the slot the slot and it got jammed

There should be 10 bolt holes on the windage tray and 8 should have spacers (basically washers) excluding the front two (which is only needed for vettes).

Damn, so did I order the wrong part number? I ordered 12558253 and the part number is even stamped in the metal on it.

Anyone know the right part number for the LS1 windage tray?

Dammit!

Wait, I'm an idiot. That is the correct part number for the LS1 windage tray. Those 8 holes should have spacers though. Once you get the tray bolted up with the spacers, spin it over to make sure the crank/pistons aren't hitting.

Ok so maybe a dumb question, but, in what direction is the tray shifted? Which set of mains are supposed to be left uncovered?

I believe only the corvette trays use the front mains, so the front mains on ours are left uncovered. However, my brain is a total today, so I'd wait for someone else to chime in just to make sure.

The F-body windage tray does not cover the entire length of the motor. It is biased towards the rear, leaving the #1 main cap exposed. Use the supplied ARP washers to space the tray upwards and check rod/counterweight clearance afterwards.

Also, it is always a good idea to check oil pump pickup to pan clearance, especially since you are moving the pickup closer to the bottom of the pan when spacing the tray upwards. Shoot for 1/4" clearance.
