New cam retainer plate came. So this is how THICK the gasket is supposed to be? Holy ****, I bet I have been having oil pressure leakage this whole time. It's the original from '99 LOL and I've had it off probably 10 times.

My cold oil psi was only around 47, which I didn't like too much.

Got the cloyes timing set too.

Not messing around this time. I don't want to do this install again for a while!

Can't possibly be a bad cam.. unless GM screwed up on installing it.
Yours is probably a different issue then. We already proved in here the cams are causing the noise. We are past that point already.

The difference with ours, the noise is 100% constant. Cold/Hot/with 0 miles on the cam/with 10k miles on the cam. Noise never changes. Cams look perfect to naked eye. Only special machinery can pick up the issue.

It is not an install issue either, it's a manufacturing issue.

Yours is prob power steering or alternator.

I don't blame you. It took all 17 pages to get to the bottom of it too. It wasn't an easy problem to figure out.

I had to tear my car down twice to figure it out.

I just got a cam from Comp Cams through Tick, hopefully they have fixed this issue. We shall see.

I thought about that but don't have the dial indicators to check it.

It's a lobe issue, not an end play issue anyway.

I'm still waiting for the issue to be proven. All I've seen are assumptions.

Um, no, they are not assumptions.

1) Lunati already verified, my cam was sent to them. I have two whining cams from them.
2) The whining noise went away upon swapping to a cam motion cam.
3) Kip already knew about this issue a decade ago and he put his research a few pages back.

What was the issue then? All I've read is that QC caught "something" but as far as I can tell, it's assumed its the same issue Kip had years ago with the surface finish of the lobe. Someone else had mentioned their cam was rubbing on the rear cover.

I'm the only one who has sent a cam back so far and been through an inspection. It's a lobe surface problem, which may or may not hurt anything. I have heard conflicting info on this so far, but I won't take chances.

The one guy in the video I found, which helped start all my research into the issue, did say his cam was rubbing, but I think he was making assumptions.

The one thing you'll find in all the videos I found and the ones we made, is that all the whining noises sound dead nuts, exactly the same across all our cars.

Also, there was no wear anywhere on my cam, front cover, or retainer plate.

So Lunati told you it's a "lobe surface problem"? Is that the extent of their explanation?

No, that is my summary of it.

Their explanation was very thorough and over my head, but it was related to the lobes, yes.

They reground and repolished the cam.

I've sent my cam to comp. Greg called me today and said the cam finish was well below there tolerance. .002. Re polished anyway to .001 and is overnighting back to me. He states it was well below gm spec also. Tho my stock cams have a mirror finish. He seemed really helpful. The cam looked fine when I sent it to them. I'd post pics but my I phone won't post them. Looks like I'll find out Friday or Monday what this re polished cam looks like.

Do you mean they were saying it was within spec?
